Leading returnable transit packaging (RTP) specialist, PHS Teacrate part of the PHS Group, has made a substantial and exciting investment in tooling from Rehrig Pacific UK Ltd to now exclusively manufacture its trays for the UK and European markets.

The enterprising move by PHS Teacrate, which is the UK’s largest crate rental company, will provide far greater choice of RTP for those involved in the food and non-food retailing sectors. This development also adds an extra string to PHS Teacrate’s bow and will significantly expand its already extensive product portfolio. For the first time RTP users will be able to get Teacrate and Rehrig crates from one single source.

Purchasing the tooling equipment to produce Rehrig crates follows on from the American-based company’s decision to focus its marketing outside Europe. PHS Teacrate already handles more than 20 million crates every year and is renowned for its flexible rental agreements, excellent customer service and fast and reliable deliveries. The additional tooling brings further supply chain stability to the market with the advantage of reduced logistics costs for those who would prefer to deal with just one supplier.

PHS Teacrate provides a wide range of crates and packaging for rental or purchase, including trays for bakery products and bale arm crates that are compatible and nest with retailers’ existing trays. Having the capacity to manufacture Rehrig crates, enforces the company’s long-term aim of taking a larger slice of the RTP market in the food retail sector by becoming a single source supplier.

Proud of having its products manufactured in the UK, PHS Teacrate offers flexible rental terms, a particularly cost-effective solution for seasonal goods such as fresh produce, as well as making crates available for sale. In addition the company can collect from retailer transit depots and offers crate washing facilities, making it the complete one-stop shop for RTP.

PHS Teacrate’s commercial director, Gordon Philip, believes the company’s purchase of the tooling from Rehrig bolsters security of supply, as it also plans to make the crates available to competitors to ensure no breakdowns in the logistics chain.

He said: “This significant tooling investment enables PHS Teacrate to provide retailers with even greater supply chain efficiencies by allowing them to source all their RTP requirements from one single supplier. In the past there have also been some difficulties in obtaining supplies of some Rehrig crates but with us acquiring the tooling to make the crates, these problems should be a thing of the past.

“For the food and non-food sectors it means we bring the considerable resources of the PHS Group to the market, giving more choice, financial security and a proven track record for rental and sale of crates. By consolidating supply we can now offer a broader range of products, which will enable ex-Rehrig customers to benefit from dealing with a UK provider who also offers a range of value added RTP services.”

PHS is one of the UK’s leading workplace service providers. It has grown from a family run firm in 1963 to become a multi-divisional, multi-national company, servicing over 250,000 customers at over 300,000 locations. The Group employs more than 5,000 staff and has a wide network of over 100 regional service branches, strategically located throughout the UK. With the backing of parent company PHS’s impressive financial resources behind it, PHS Teacrate has strengthened its position as a leading player in the RTP market. The business remains on track in achieving its goal of becoming the preferred RTP choice for food and non-food items.
