Southampton based Meachers Global Logistics teamed up with City College to provide students with a taste of working within the logistics industry.
The Company, which has been working with students who are taking their BTEC Business First Diploma, set the group a challenge to complete a tender that needed to be submitted in writing before being pitched to members of their senior management team.
Commenting on the project, Gary Whittle, Commercial Director of Meachers Global Logistics said: “We have enjoyed working with the students at City College and have been impressed with their enthusiasm and interest in our business; it is a growing challenge to encourage new talent into the industry. Work experience and partnering with education provides a great opportunity for young people to understand that our business is far more than just moving & storing boxes. As a Company, we are committed to recruiting the best people for the job, but also developing and training those who want to build a career in logistics.”
Lorraine Robinson, lecturer at City College added: “The project provided the students with the opportunity to experience first hand many of the core business skills that they have been studying such as leadership, team work and problem solving. This hands-on experience is really valuable in providing experience of the business world.”
In April, Meachers also received 45 students from Brittany, France on an exchange visit from Lycée Professionnel Bel Air; a school for 15-20 year olds specialising in the logistics and transportation industry. The group were given a real world understanding of how logistics works in the UK.
Sara-Claire Loudec from the school commented, “My colleagues and the students were absolutely delighted by the visit, and it was the perfect visit for our students. To get first-hand experience is always worthwhile.”
