Leading logistics consultancy, Davies & Robson, has helped fish feed manufacturer, Skretting realise significant cost and service benefits following a comprehensive review of its supply chain operations.

Part of the Nutreco N.V. Group, Skretting is the world leader in the production and supply of feed for farmed fish. Total annual production is approximately 1.3 million tonnes, manufactured at 18 factories across five continents. With its UK head office in Wincham, near Northwich in Cheshire, Skretting operates two UK manufacturing plants, at Longridge near Preston and at Invergordon in Scotland, producing feeds for Atlantic salmon, freshwater and seawater trout, carp, tilapia and sea bass.

As part of a wider business re-engineering programme, Davies & Robson was brought in to identify efficiencies and introduce best practices in Skretting’s supply chain. A key part of this process was to ensure changes were fully sustainable within the business going forward, and this required full involvement and engagement of the management team at all levels.

Davies & Robson initially worked with Skretting to help understand where costs were incurred given the complex nature of the supply chain, which involves the delivery of product to remote locations, some of them offshore.

This included a full review of Skretting’s supply chain and infrastructure resulting in the closure of a small warehouse in the South West and the consolidation of storage at the manufacturing plants. It also included identification of opportunities to optimise vehicle utilisation.

Davies & Robson also identified an opportunity to improve the level and range of services to meet the needs of Skretting’s customers, including enhanced communications to support successful deliveries to the most challenging delivery points – many of them remote, with restricted access and limited equipment and manpower.

To implement these improvements and further improve efficiency, visibility and control, Davies & Robson recommended that the management of part of the supply chain be outsourced to a single third-party provider. Working closely with Skretting’s production and operations functions, the company produced a comprehensive ITT and helped to evaluate the responses, resulting in the appointment of WH Bowker.

Throughout the project Skretting personnel remained as part of the change team, in order to embed logistics management best practices within the business for the future.

Skretting UK Operations Manager, Stewart Stevenson, said: “The approach that Davies & Robson took to reviewing our supply chain and implementing change alongside our management team has ensured that we get the full benefits, and that logistics best practice becomes part of our ongoing management processes.”

With more than 85 years experience, Northamptonshire-based Davies & Robson specialises in all aspects of supply chain management, working with domestic and international businesses across a range of industry sectors.
