Axiom GB has recently strengthened its UK presence by opening a new mechanical design facility to support continued business expansion. Located in Thornhill, Dumfriesshire, the design centre is headed by John Nickson, Axiom’s managing director, who has already begun to employ local staff.
With its headquarters and manufacturing facility in Tamworth, Axiom is a family owned business. It was formed in 1999 by John Nickson and his two sons, Matthew and Andrew. The company’s strength is the design, development and installation of bespoke mechanical handling systems and controls for warehouses and production lines. In the industry it is particularly well known for its sorters, order picking systems, conveyors and labelling solutions.
Axiom’s head office is based in Tamworth because it was the home town for the three owners until John moved to Scotland in 2004 to pursue his passion for salmon fishing and shooting.
Matthew and Andrew continued to run the business in Tamworth and from time to time trips were made to the ‘home office’ at John’s house to discuss projects and develop new products. In this way the business slowly grew, as did the need for more staff. Earlier this year a decision was taken to expand Axiom’s mechanical design department by opening an office in Scotland.
“Our goal was to locate an office close to where our father lives and to develop the business in the local area, employing local people,” explains Matthew Nickson. “We have found the perfect place in Drumlanrig Street in Thornhill and our new design centre is now fully functional.
“We are also delighted to announce that we have employed Stewart Queen as a design engineer to support our business growth. Stewart lives in a village a few miles from Thornhill and has a history of working as a design engineer in the mechanical handling industry.”
