Union Industries, the UK market leading manufacturer of industrial rapid roll Hi-Speed Doors, is helping John Pointon & Sons address environmental challenges at its new build operation in Staffordshire.

The Leeds-based company, which designs, manufactures, installs and maintains its own range of fast acting doors, has worked alongside the waste company to provide environmental issue solutions for its factory.

John Pointon and Sons provides waste disposal, recycling and environmental solutions for animal by-products and food waste. At its base in Cheddleton near Stoke-on-Trent, it transforms the waste material into high-quality products destined for a portfolio of industries in the UK and across Europe.

In order to combat environmental issues, three of Union’s heavy-duty Ramdoors of 4.85m wide x 6.0m high have been installed in the external doorways of a new production line area. These access doorways will experience almost constant forklift traffic meaning they would be constantly open, causing odours and noise to be released into the immediate outside area.

The fast speeds at which the Ramdoors open and close, approximately 1.0m per second, helps combat these problems. The doors are open for the minimum amount of time possible before closing automatically, meaning odour and noise egress is kept to an absolute minimum.

In common with the other doors in the range, the Ramdoors feature Union’s highly-regarded ‘Crash-Out’ damage protection facility, which ensures that they remain operable if the bottom beam is hit by a speeding vehicle. This proven system, which has been on Union’s doors for almost 20 years, drastically reduces repair costs and guarantees minimal down-time.

Barney Williams, Director at John Pointon and Sons, said: “We have used Union Industries’ doors on our site since 2005, having tried other rapid roll doors in the past which suffered from wind and crash damage. It would seem that only Union’s doors can stand up to the very testing environment we have here at Pointon’s”

“The latest installation comprises of three doors; numbers 18, 19 and 20 on the site, for our new production line. We are committed to being sympathetic and responsible neighbours in the communities where we operate, therefore, ensuring that our facilities fully comply with environmental legislation and do not cause disturbance or unpleasantness is very important to us. Union’s Ramdoors are helping us maintain this.”

Neil Irwin, Technical Sales Engineer at Union Industries, said: “Our clients have all kinds of requirements and issues which our rapid roll doors can address. We have a long working relationship with John Pointon and Sons and are delighted to be installing our twentieth door for them. This figure demonstrates the level of satisfaction with our Ramdoors and the success in tackling environmental concerns.
