Fast on the heels of its success in increasing Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council’s recycling levels from 26% to 55% in just 8 months, Acumen Distribution has achieved ISO9001 and ISO14001 accreditation, at the first attempt, for its waste transfer station in Stoke-on-Trent. Already managing waste for a number of local authorities in the area, Acumen plans to use its newly won accreditations to expand its kerbside recycling collections to other authorities in the region.
Undertaken with support from Rosewood Keen Management Services (RKMS), an initial review was carried out which assessed current practice against accreditation requirements. Relevant legislative and regulatory requirements were identified and compliance assessed. Operational procedures were then amended to incorporate the necessary controls for accreditation.
Acumen Distribution’s Waste Transfer Station handles paper, card, plastics, cans, glass, textiles and food waste and holds appropriate licences from the Environment Agency. The amount of recycling has grown to 250 tonnes per week and is still rising. The company collects recyclates four days a week from Tuesday to Friday using nine trucks which include five Terberg kerbside vehicles on Dennis Eagle chassis, two Mitsubishi 7.5 tonne light vehicles for rural collections and difficult access and two twin pack compactor vehicles.
