Spaciotempo – the UK’s leading specialist in the provision of semi-permanent warehousing – has recently completed two major installations demonstrating the flexibility and extent of its offering to the storage and logistics sector.
For Webb’s of Wychbold, the UK’s premier garden centre, it has created a 975m2 storage facility at the company’s Worcestershire site. From an initial order back in 2007 for a small storage unit for the burgeoning business, Webb’s of Wychbold has now specified a third consecutive building structure from Spaciotempo.
The new building – which adjoins the two existing ones – is 15m x 35m with a 4.2m eave height. As each building has been added, they have been gutter linked and side walls have been removed to create a single, larger storage space. To reduce costs and maximise efficiency, each time a new structure is added the walling from one side of the original building is used from a new wall on the extended building. With this latest addition, the resulting area now totals some 975 m2 and houses stock and equipment for the garden centre’s operations.
Crowned GCA Garden Centre of the Year for the last three years in a row, Webbs of Wychbold is a family business providing over fifty acres of garden centre, inspirational gardens and a well stocked nursery. It has developed a reputation for quality in all aspects of its business.
It is the success of the existing buildings from Spaciotempo and modular nature of the structures which appealed Webbs Senior Manager, David Lowe. He said: “By re-using components as the footprint of the buildings has grown, we have ensured that costs have been kept down and the modular format has made it possible for the final structure to be built in three phases yet remain open plan and appear as one building.

We have managed to reposition shutter and personnel doors as well as the exterior walling of each building and we’ve added further lighting as the changes have progressed ensuring that the buildings are totally fit for our purpose.”
The second Spaciotempo installation is an industrial project carried out for Dril- quip Europe Ltd – a major supplier to the thriving local oil and gas industries – located in Aberdeen. Occupying a large production site in the industrial heartland of North East Scotland it manufactures a range of capital drilling and rig equipment for deepwater environments.
As European headquarters of Dril-quip Inc, the company was looking to extend its facility, however, high quotes for a permanent building led the company to put the expansion proposals on hold. However, at the start of the economic downturn Dril-quip re-examined the project in the hope of achieving better value from construction firms.
With prices still considered too high, the company examined the options for a temporary structure to meet its unique requirements for an on-site post production test facility.

Delighted to win the business, Spaciotempo worked hand in hand with Dril-quip to establish a building design that would work within the constraints of the site. A crucial element of the design was the provision of a 10m door – required for large pieces of assembled kit to move from production to testing. To achieve the irregular aperture the building had to be designed minus a load bearing up-right/leg and without compromising the structural integrity.
Keen to find the answer, Spaciotempo sourced an instant pass door – much lighter in weight and practically self supporting thanks to the installation of a steel goal post type sub-frame. Combined with 3 single personnel fire doors, thermo roof and gables and single skin steel cladding to the walls, the structure has exceeded all expectations and is proving itself fit for purpose day in day out.
