Pregis Protective Packaging Europe has won a prestigious award for innovation from SYBA, the Czech Packaging Association, for the new parts transportation solution it has developed for Skoda’s Octavia Combi model.
Success in this competition means that Pregis is now eligible to enter the development into the Worldstar Awards, organised by the World Packaging Organisation, with the potential for global recognition.
The new system, which was developed by Vaclav Dolezal, an engineer at the Pregis European Design Centre based in Prague, provides improved levels of protection while at the same time doubling the number of parts that can be carried each time.
SYBA’s Packaging of the Year 2009 award scheme featured six categories and attracted 90 entrants. The Pregis innovation was entered into the Transport and Technological Packaging category, where it was judged by a panel of eleven packaging professionals who were looking for original solutions in each group.
The Packaging of the Year Awards were presented at a special ceremony at which Vaclav Dolezal was also recognised for his role in the Pregis development.
The Pregis solution for Skoda won the award thanks to its ingenious design – a new PP/PE box which created an additional 30% volume than the previous standard plastic version, allowing the cross positioning of parts on two different levels. This has increased the number of parts in each box from 11 to 21. At the same time, the extra space has allowed room for an effective partitioning and cushioning system, using die-cutted 5 mm polypropylene from Cartonplast and converted cross-linked Trocellen foam.
The new system has significantly reduced the number of damaged parts delivered to the Skoda factory. Equally important, because the box can carry double the number of parts, this has halved the number of lorries needed for transportation, offering important environmental benefits in the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions. The increased number of parts per box has also saved space within the warehouse.
