bedford-shelfBedford Shelving Ltd has announced a significant increase in demand for bespoke products following its move to a brand new manufacturing-supported location.

As well as using the new manufacturing base to increase its range of ‘in-stock’ products, the company has recently completed a number of major bespoke orders – including a frontline military medical storage system for one of the UK’s leading suppliers of engineering solutions to defence and government customers.

Mark Walsh, Director, said: “We are experiencing a significant uplift in the volume of enquiries from customers seeking bespoke shelving and racking solutions.

“This has ranged from a specialist theatre pack trolley conforming to the UN3291 standard covering the transport of dangerous goods, to a high-density storage system which has increased space utlisation in an awkward area by 60% for one customer.

“By having our own in-house craftsmen and wire-working operations we are able to work very closely with clients to deliver the exact bespoke shelving system they require.”

Yorkshire-based Bedford Shelving is one of the UK’s leading manufacturers and suppliers of high-quality wire, aluminium, stainless steel and chrome shelving for healthcare and catering use.

Boasting a 174-year heritage in the wire and shelving industry, it recently opened a new 1,000 sq ft showroom, supported by a significant on-site manufacturing operation and a factory in Brighouse, Yorkshire.

The company is most widely known for its category-leading ‘Quartermaster’ and ‘Livewire’ hygienic shelving solutions and its category-leading wire products have been used in hospitals for more than 40 years.

Bedford Shelving has also introduced a number of new internal design and management systems designed to improve customer service as it expands its operations.

In house teams are using SolidWorks 3D CAD software in all design projects while the introduction of the Progress Plus business and production system has contributed to Bedford Shelving achieving a 98% on-time delivery target.

Added Mark Walsh: “We have invested in the installation of the new systems and staff training as a policy of continuous improvement in the business and we are very happy with the results – as are our customers, new and old.

“We are a slicker, more creative organisation and this is reflected in sales and the volume of new enquiries – especially for the bespoke products.

“The combination of the new systems and working alongside a manufacturing operation has also allowed us to increase the value of our stock-holding by 100%, so most of our core products are always in stock.”

Quartermaster has been the company’s main wire shelving system for well over 25 years and is available in mild steel with a bright zinc plated finish – or a tough smooth nylon finish for damp environments – and in 304 grade stainless steel for sterile environments.

Quartermaster shelving is strong and rigid and is made mobile by fitting castors and is a popular choice for commercial kitchens fridges and freezers as well as sterile and medical stores.

Livewire, meanwhile, has an iconic wave edge shelf design and is supported using conical shelf supports connected to posts via a white plastic shelf support, which locates over a post ring.

It is available in a bright and durable chrome finish, while 400mm deep shelves feature an epoxy seal which gives the shelving resistance to damp environments such as cold-rooms.

Livewire is a popular choice for display as well as storage applications and 75mm castors can be fitted into the posts to make units mobile.

The company has launched a new website, www.bedfordshelf.com, which outlines its full products and applications.
