A new range of print & apply labelling machines able to monitor their own performance, giving advance warning of component failure and alerting service engineers automatically to any faults or maintenance needs has been launched in the UK by Logopak International.
“This is a major step forward for print & apply labelling,” says Logopak UK general manager Wilson Clark. “The increased reliability reduces still further the risk of line stoppage as a result of downtime in the labelling system, often the lowest cost item in a line.”
The monitoring software forms part of the new PowerLeap 3 control system developed for Logopak’s 400 Series print & apply machines and, points out Wilson Clark, also helps reduce the number of skilled personnel required to supervise the labelling operation.
At its basic level the control can be programmed to alert service staff via an E-mail or text message to simple problems such as breaks in the label web or print ribbon, and labels running out, directing them immediately to the machine for attention.
However, the software also checks the operation of machine components to provide an early warning of potential problems, relaying data via E-mail to Logopak’ own technicians. Wilson Clark gives an example from initial beta-site trials.
“An error message from the central processor showed that the voltage through the main chip was fluctuating, which would eventually lead the board to fail. So Logopak was able to post a replacement to the user before the original had time to go wrong!”
Aimed at mid-speed duties in the range 40-50 cases or shrink-wrap collations a minute, the Logopak 400 Series features a touch screen display, full database management facilities and is Ethernet compatible for networking within a factory-wide management information system. Print width is 107mm.
