The apparently simple act of replacing a fluorescent tube in a working environment has over recent years turned into a major operation. Closing off the work place, erecting signs for health and safety, and then the disposal of the tube through an authorised contractor are all part of changing a light bulb today! These are procedures that until now we have taken for granted as part of a normal maintenance programme. That is until the advent of the LED (light emitting diode) Tube, the natural replacement for fluorescents.
Earlier this year, a Cambridge technology company launched a new energy saving and environmentally friendly replacement for the widely used fluorescent tube, NET LED Lighting. These environmentally friendly tubes, which are available in a number of lengths and shades, last at least three times longer than a conventional fluorescent, thus reducing the frequency of replacements. When eventually they do fail, being LED’s, there is no sudden loss of light necessitating the immediate change of the tube. Some LED’s will start to dim, so failure is a gradual process over months or even years allowing plenty of time to arrange a convenient time to change the tube.
Advances in LED technology have enabled LED tubes to be produced which simply replace the existing fluorescent ones, providing the same amount of light but with a 65% reduction in electricity consumption. Whilst this in itself provides enough reason to switch, the further health and safety benefits associated with the product ensures a cleaner, quieter and safer working environment.
If all the above weren’t enough, when it comes to disposal there are none of the restrictions associated with its fluorescent counterpart. According to recycling statistics there are approximately 80 million fluorescent tubes sent to landfill sites in the UK every year. When the LED tube comes to the end of its life it is much more easily recyclable having none of the toxic polluting chemicals such as phosphor, mercury and lead often found in fluorescent tubes.
For some time now, the energy consumption associated with lighting has been a major issue in the EU and has resulted in a worldwide ban on incandescent light bulbs by the year 2020. It is expected that further studies will result in a push for businesses to look seriously at saving energy in the work place, with both the government and certain green financial institutions offering support to those businesses that embrace new energy saving technology.
So the question to be asked is how can my business benefit from the use of NET LED Lighting?
1. Reduces lighting maintenance costs by at least 2/3rds
2. Financial savings on running costs, typically 65%
3. Financial saving in labour – less often tube changes (60,000 hrs)
4. Lasts at least three times as long as a conventional tube
5. Organisations can reduce their carbon footprint
6. Qualifies for the Governments ‘Enhanced Capital Allowance ‘ Scheme
7. Meets, CE, UL and EN specifications
8. Has a one year no quibble replacement guarantee.
If your business is a qualifying SME you may be entitled to an interest free loan from the Carbon Trust covering all or part of the costs of purchasing and installing NET LED Tubes.
