Draper Tools are in no doubt; Caljan Rite-Hite’s telescopic boom conveyor with integral lifting aid is the only way to empty containers ergonomically. After seeing the equipment in operation at a test installation, the decision to install Caljan BeltTrack fitted with Vaculex ParceLift™ to empty containers at the warehouse & distribution centre in Chandlers Ford was quickly taken.
Previously, a team of four, five or even six people were needed to empty containers. This manual process has now been replaced by three or four-man teams and a Caljan BeltTrack telescopic boom conveyor fitted with Vaculex ParceLift™. The unit is fitted onto rail tracks that lie flush in the floor, so that it can be moved between doors. Although ergonomics rather than speed have been their prime consideration, Draper Tools are also seeing a financial benefit as fewer people are needed to unload a container.
The First of its Kind in the UK
The equipment is quite unique and the first of its kind in the UK. Keith McLean, Warehouse Manager at the Chandlers Ford facility, doesn’t see this as a problem “Initially there were a few teething problems, but the service engineers installing the equipment didn’t leave us until everything was 100% in order. Since then the concept has certainly proved itself.” Both Keith McLean and his colleague Ian Lancaster, Warehouse Logistics Manager, were totally convinced that this was the way forward, after seeing the equipment on-site at a reference installation. “We were very impressed. Once we had seen the concept, taking a decision was easy. Using it ourselves was the optimal way of testing a new aid.”
Designed Specifically for use with Telescopic Boom Conveyors
The ergonomic lifting aid is designed specifically for use with Caljan Rite-Hite’s telescopic boom conveyors. The unique concept allows the equipment to contract when entering the container, expanding automatically to full operating height once inside. The Vaculex ParceLift fitted at the head of the telescopic boom conveyor enables the operator to easily lift the goods from the back of the container, placing them on the conveyor belt which travels back into the warehouse. Here the goods are palletised by other team members working with similar equipment at the tail end of the belt. Ian Lancaster is pleased with the result “In additon to the ergonomic benefits of having an aid that lifts up to 40 kg, this arrangement gives the crew a lot more space to stack the pallets and sort the goods.”
