megafan.jpgA new trend in fan technology is taking off, creating an ethical solution to uncomfortable working conditions in large, high-ceiling buildings. Negative employee morale, productivity, absenteeism, errors, turnover and complaints increase when temperatures in the workplace are beyond a comfortable range. A new type of ceiling fan is now being used to consistently generate a gentle non-disruptive breeze, to deliver a pleasing and comfortable, carbon-friendly working environment.

The fans cool the air in the summer, and raise the temperature at working level in the winter. They also mix air layers associated with heat, fumes, smoke and noxious gases, to make a healthier and more productive environment.

For summer temperatures, Megafan’s High Volume Low Speed fans use a highly efficient extended airfoil blade to circulate a large column of air at just the right speed to optimise the “cooling effect”. They push down large columns of air, which when hitting the ground, move out across the floor in all directions, as a slow non-disruptive breeze. This causes a cooling effect.

In winter, the fans enable most of the heat trapped at ceiling level to be utilised. The fans work by pulling down the warm air that is trapped at ceiling level, and pushing it down to floor level, homogenising the heat from floor to ceiling.

This groundbreaking technology makes the working environment more energy-efficient. This makes sound economic sense too, as using less energy lowers operating costs. From an environmental perspective, it’s an effective way for businesses to cut carbon emissions and, in turn, combat climate change. Energy-Efficiency Loans from the Carbon Trust are available, as a cost effective way to replace or upgrade existing equipment with a more energy efficient version.

One of the UK’s major supermarket chains is already benefiting from Megafans. MegaFan technologies have supplied 8 of their 20ft, 10 bladed low speed fans for the company’s major distribution centre. The 175,000ft warehouse has installed energy saving High Speed Low Volume fan technology, that will payback in less than 2 years – providing a healthier, safer and more comfortable working environment. The estimated reduction in gas consumption is 70%, equivalent to savings of around £25,000 per winter. The fans are also easy to install, low maintenance and have low running costs of approximately £0.06p per hour, per fan. Several major companies have already reduced their carbon footprint whilst increasing their profits by installing MegaFan High Volume Low Speed Fans.

Garry Stiven, founder of Megafans states: ‘We believe that the future for this very simple but effective technology is vast. There are no restrictions on who can use the fans, as long as the building has a ceiling height of more than 5 metres and is roughly an area of 5,000 square feet. Megafans can be used in industry, warehouses, gymnasiums, in fact any large building with a high ceiling – for summer cooling or winter energy savings.’
