To meet the demands of the automotive spare parts industry, storage systems must provide fast and easy access to parts at all times. SSI Schaefer’s new LogiMAT vertical lift storage and order picking system is taking the auto world by storm and is proving to be very popular worldwide. It is seen by many to be an ideal solution for maximising space within a parts department by using height. Similar to an oversized drawer cabinet with two stacks of trays, a lift operates between the stacks extracting individual trays as required.

The Volkswagen Centre in Fulda Germany showcases a range of vehicles from the VW, Skoda and Audi. With sales and after sales services for each brand kept entirely separate a brand new semi-automated parts stores was introduced last May on two levels. At the heart of its warehouse logisitics operation is SSI Schaefer’s multi-functional LogiMat storage lift to ensure efficient processes. The parts are stored in modular shelving, cross-beam and mobile racking systems as well as in drawers. The LogiMat lift has 60 trays and is directly integrated with the other systems. It fulfils a range of functions: for example, it serves as a link between the levels, with one service opening at each level and it acts as an interim storage for picked items before they are retrieved.

Philip Atzert CEO at the Group’s VW Centre explains: “Because orders are pre-picked and stored in the lift for our employees, we cut waiting times at the collection point. It’s really smart.”

LogiMats have also proven successful at the distribution centre for Volkswagen in Beijing, China. To improve space efficiency and increasing picking peed for small parts, the customer chose to have two storage lifts in combination with multiple shelving solutions.

The LogiMat lift saves up to 90% of warehouse space in comparison to conventional shelf systems and delivers fast, ergonomic picking for small parts. The picking speed at the VW distribution centre has increased between six and ten-fold.

With decades of experience in designing for the industry, SSI Schaefer supplies cost-effective systems for long-term improvements in efficiency. Quality, innovations and customer orientation are the chief guiding elements on which new products and systems are developed.
