What’s the most exciting thing about your job?
Walking the seamless and jointless freshly laid concrete floor and knowing that each team member from each department worked together to deliver that. I want our customers get that same feeling.
Who’s inspired you most in your career?
I’ve been very fortunate with some very good bosses who gave me guidance when needed and space to be individual, but the person who inspired and motivated me to climb beyond my own self set horizons is Mrs Goodband. To climb Everest you need a good support team.
If you were an item in a warehouse, what would you be?
Most days I would be the heating control room but some days I need to be the fire extinguisher.
If you had to do it all over again, what would you do different?
I have no regrets and the past is not within our control. However I do tell my children to dream bigger and push harder as you’re stronger than you know.
What’s the most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to you at work?
Arriving nice and early to a regional office for a meeting only to have the wrong regional office 50 miles away from where I should have been. Luckily my boss had a good sense of humour.
Who or what makes you laugh?
Only Fools & Horses and Micky Flanagan.
Do you have any hidden talents?
I have previously competed in Olympic distance triathlons.
Who would be your favourite party guest?
Greg Davies as I love his life stories.
What is the greatest luxury in your life?
My 1989 VW campervan fondly known as Bertha, not luxury in performance but a luxury in upkeep expense.
What is your favourite guilty pleasure?
A wine subscription.
Do you have any secret ambitions?
To take a slow road trip in Bertha around the Scotland 500 coast road.
What’s your dream holiday destination?
We booked Mauritius as a treat for my wife’s 40th birthday which was cancelled due to Covid-19 so I would love to make this happen. The beaches, golf, rain forest and 5* luxury would be very welcome right now in our present climate.
What are your three favourite movies of all time?
Pulp Fiction, Layer Cake and Goodfellas.
What is your favourite book of all time?
I’m sure I’ve read better, but the books I read the most as a teenager and later as an adult was the Adrian Mole series. Other than that, I do like historical true life novels such as the first hand encounters of the Second World War.
What’s your favourite pastime?
Food and wine with friends.
If you won the Lottery, what would you do?
Buy myself a 1973 Porsche 911, invest the rest and maybe treat the family if they had not spent it for me already.
What would be your advice to someone thinking about coming into the industry (apart from “don’t do it”)?
Do something you are passionate about as this will show through and makes you genuine.
