The theme of AITT’s ground-breaking online conference was operator training in challenging times and if one key message stood out, it is the need for consistent, reliable operator training whatever the circumstances. The conference was just one in a series of initiatives launched by AITT in order to support not only training providers, but everyone involved in the materials handling sector.

From the outset of the pandemic, the HSE made it clear that training remained an essential requirement, in order for employers to meet their obligations and duty of care by ensuring that operators are appropriately trained.

Many key industries relied more heavily than ever before on workplace transport, but social distancing guidelines meant that both businesses and training providers were unsure how to offer training safely.

In response, AITT lobbied the HSE for clear direction, and by working cooperatively with other accrediting bodies we created a comprehensive guidance document for training amid COVID-19. This included instructions for adapting classroom-based training, rules on PPE, and measures for practical training. That guidance was adopted widely and served as a template for others.

The pandemic proved that there is rarely, if ever, a valid reason to forgo training, and reinforced HSE guidelines that under no circumstances should employers allow untrained operators to use materials handling equipment. It also demonstrated that, by taking all necessary precautions, it is possible to train candidates effectively and efficiently, while minimising risk.

To enhance safety whilst also increasing efficiency, we also took the step of digitalising many of our documents. Not only is this an eco-friendlier approach as it cuts down on paper use, but it also gives members access to up-to-date test papers and offers a more COVID-secure option as there is no risk of cross contamination when handling physical paperwork.

The future of training

The online conference hosted by AITT featured a number of guest speakers from across the materials handling sector industry.

Key themes included the impact of new technologies and the role of automation. In a poll of attendees, 75 percent said they are either concerned or recognise there is some risk as automation plays an ever-greater role within materials handling. However, a key takeaway from the webinar was that operators will remain integral to operations. There will be increased opportunities to work in partnership with automated systems, but trainers could take reassurance that there will be no substitute for many of the duties they perform.

We plan to hold similar online events in 2021, and we look forward to working with our members and the wider industry to drive up standards and consistency in operator training for the benefit of all concerned.
