Having held a series of training workshops and participated in events to help recruit talent into the logistics sector, 2015 has been another busy year for the Automated Material Handling Systems Association (AMHSA). The highlight of the year was the launch of the AMHSA apprenticeship programme at the organisation’s AGM in April. Operated in association with car manufacturer, Toyota, the scheme enables AMHSA members to take part in a four-year programme under which apprentices spend the first two years learning a range of hands-on, high-tech engineering skills at the state-of-the-art Toyota Academy in Burnaston and the remaining two years building on this with industry-specific skills and knowledge at the premises of the AMHSA member.
AMHSA has continued to contribute to the formation and revision of Europe-wide policies and standards. Subjects for this work over the past year have included the EN 528 standard for ASRS safety and cycle time calculations for shuttle systems in association with FEM (European Federation of Materials Handling). The revised Construction (Design and Management) Regulations – which AMHSA had also contributed to the overhaul of – came into force in April so AMHSA hosted a CDM 2015 Update Course in May to explain how the new regulations affect the materials handling sector, followed by a training course on their legal implications in June.
30-year milestone
With two major industry exhibitions taking place in 2016 – as well as AMHSA’s 30th anniversary – the year ahead promises another full calendar. AMHSA is partnering both the IntraLogisteX show – which takes place on 16 & 17 March at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry – and IMHX 2016, taking place at Birmingham’s NEC from 13-16 September.
Both events will provide AMHSA with a great platform from which to present the benefits of automation to an industry facing everincreasing demands for speed and efficiency.
The first major event in AMHSA’s 2016 diary, however, will be its introductory Training Workshop, to be held on 10 February 2016 at its headquarters in Market Harborough. Returning by popular demand, this event is ideal for people who are new to the industry or want to have a wider overview of handling systems. This all-day event will feature a range of presentations on various aspects of automated and manual warehouses including system design, racking and shelving, pallets and totes, conveyors, cranes, picking solutions, AGVs, WCS/WMS, sortation and despatch systems.
