Warehouse & Logistics News spoke to Ken Jones, Managing Director of STORAX Racking Systems Ltd.

Warehouse & Logistics News – What does your job involve day to day? Has your role changed since last year?

General Management of the company, I previously also looked after UK & International Sales, we have now appointed Gary A Firth as Sales Director to handle the large numbers of enquiries.

W&LN – 2011: how was it for you and Storax?

We have had a number of large projects which have consumed considerable resource.

W&LN – What is your particular proposition for customers in the warehouse & logistics sector? Has that changed since last year?

Many of our customers are in the frozen food business which has given them strength and even increased turnover.

W&LN – How has the Racking & Shelving sector been performing in 2011? What do you see as the most important recent developments in the sector?

The swing has continued so that high density storage optimises space utilisation.

W&LN – Have you moved into any new business areas during 2011?

No, we have consolidated our existing business more towards high density storage solutions.

W&LN – Has your company grown in the last 12 months?

We have seen on-going stability with sales maintained at the level of previous years.

W&LN – Have you been investing in improving your premises, taking on more staff, upgrading your website, enhancing your IT etc in 2011?

We are planning to invest in IT in the next 12 months in order to improve our inventory control etc.

W&LN – How are your existing products and services doing?

Stable and as we have said, customers are investing towards frozen food.

W&LN – Have you launched any new products or services in 2011? What are they, and how are they performing?

Additional high density storage products.

W&LN – What’s been your company’s single biggest achievement in business this year?

Maintaining and growing sales throughout the year.

W&LN – What was your personal favourite business moment in 2011?

Increased overseas sales, particularly in Latin America.

W&LN – If your company had to go through 2011 again, what would you do differently?

A greater focus on the international market.

W&LN – Do you operate in any other countries besides the UK? How are you getting on there? Have you gone into any new countries in 2011?

Overseas markets are as strong or stronger than the UK, especially South America.

W&LN – Which industry sectors are your customers in? What applications do people use your products/services for?

High density storage of foods, particularly with picking.

W&LN – Do you sell your products direct or through distributors? Has that strategy changed in the last year?

Through construction companies or direct.

W&LN – How does your forward order book compare with a year ago? What about the waiting list for your (products) compare with a year ago?

We have a lead time of 3-6 months which is on a par with last year.

W&LN – Which trade shows did you exhibit at in 2011? How were they?

Trade shows are good for points of contact but web contacts can be equally effective.

W&LN – As the Christmas period is traditionally the busiest time of year for the UK warehousing and logistics industry, what challenges has your company been facing?

Ensuring that contracts are completed by the end of the year, our customers are more steady in the second half of the year, not just at Christmas.

W&LN – As a company, what are your new year’s resolutions for 2012?

Increase sales and marketing activities with further investment in systems and web development.

W&LN – What are your plans for 2012?

Expansion of products within the UK and overseas markets.

W&LN – Where do you see your company in three years’ time?

Broader based high density supplier of storage equipment to UK and international customers.

W&LN – And finally, what would you like Father Christmas to bring your company in 2012?!
