Chris Simchick, Chief Growth Officer at Lucas Systems, speaks to Warehouse & Logistics News.

How would you explain the Lucas Systems culture?

What is embedded in the culture at Lucas Systems is a customer-centric and people-focused mindset, while maintaining a results-oriented approach. It is a collaborative, practical environment where technology is never treated as an end in itself, but as a way to help customers achieve better results and make work easier for the people who use it every day.

That mindset comes through in the way teams work: everyone, from software developers and support engineers to project managers, is encouraged to spend time in real distribution centres so they can understand the day-to-day realities of warehouse operations first-hand and see themselves as an extension of each customer’s operations team and their ultimate success.

How does this culture assist your clients’ requirements?

I think that culture makes a real difference because it keeps Lucas close to the day-to-day realities our clients are dealing with. Warehouses and distribution centres are complex, fast-moving environments where conditions can change by the hour, or even by the minute, and decisions often must be made in real time. Our teams spend time in those environments, and our solutions experts have decades of experience on and around warehouse floors, so we understand how much pressure there is to improve efficiency, accuracy, throughput, safety and labour utilisation without disrupting the operation.

That understanding shapes the way we work with customers. We do not believe in one-size-fits-all implementations. Every operation has its own constraints, systems, workforce needs and performance goals, so we focus on creating customised, bespoke solutions that are tied to the outcomes each customer needs most, whether that is greater efficiency, higher accuracy, faster onboarding, better visibility or more resilient day-to-day execution. Tools like our voice-directed warehousing solution and dynamic slotting are designed to fit into a client’s existing IT environment and customised to support the way their teams actually work.

What makes Lucas Systems unique in your industry?

Beyond our deep and tenured industry experience delivering optimisation solutions to the market, what makes Lucas different is that we have always looked at the warehouse through both a strategic and practical lens. Strategically it is not lost on us that we are mission critical to our customers’ operations and that we help our customers drive revenue as well as generate efficiencies for their businesses that are meaningful. We focus on optimising the operations of our customers through deploying technology that becomes ubiquitous with the people in the warehouse while being scalable and flexible for the business. For more than 25 years, we have worked inside complex distribution environments where the pressure to move faster, operate leaner and serve customers better is only increasing. That experience gives us a deep appreciation for the realities our customers face every day, and it is why scalability and extensibility are so important to our approach. The industry is changing quickly, but many operations are still being asked to meet modern expectations with systems and processes that were not designed for this level of complexity, growth or real-time decision-making.

Our role is to help close that gap. We bring technology, data and operational expertise together in a way that helps warehouses become more dynamic. Lucas stands out because we can customise solutions around the specific needs, constraints and growth plans of each client, whether they are a large enterprise network or a smaller operation preparing for expansion. That creates real competitive advantage because our solutions are not just configured for today’s requirements; they are designed to extend over time, integrate easily with AI, machine learning, robotics and other best-of-breed technologies, and fit into the wider ecosystem the customer already has in place.

How future-proof and flexible are your solutions?

Because no one truly knows what the future will bring, businesses need the ability to adapt without rebuilding operations every time the market shifts. That is why Lucas has always invested, and continues to invest, in meaningful resources in R&D and leading-edge operational advances, from dynamic slotting and AI-driven optimisation to robotics and other emerging warehouse technologies.

That is where flexibility matters most. The most resilient operations can adjust workflows, labour planning, inventory strategies and automation investments as conditions change. Lucas helps customers build that adaptability into the core of their warehouse operations with scalable, extensible solutions that integrate with the technologies they will need next. As AI, robotics, cloud technology, machine learning and new service models reshape the industry, the winners will make smarter decisions faster, scale without unnecessary disruption and keep their people effective through every stage of growth. Lucas’ continued R&D focus helps customers keep pace with change and take advantage of it in practical, outcome-driven ways.

What new services/solutions are you offering for 2026?

In 2026, Lucas Systems is delivering a powerful suite of new capabilities designed to help distribution centres operate faster, smarter, and with less friction. We’re bringing voice-directed intelligence to collaborative robotics, integrating Jennifer, the brains, voice and orchestration engine of our solutions, with autonomous co-bot workflows so pickers can work hands-free alongside robots eliminating barcode scanning and touchscreen interaction while reducing travel time.

On the optimisation front, we’re expanding our AI and machine learning capabilities across multiple dimensions. Our Best Pallet Matching, an exclusive real-time work creation capability, is now enabling customers to pick for multiple stores simultaneously on double or triple pallet jacks. And our Dynamic Work Optimisation engine continues to advance with faster map compilation, new palletisation strategies, and enhanced sequence calculation to further compress travel and balance workloads. Together, these solutions represent our commitment to continuous innovation and in keeping Lucas customers at the forefront of warehouse performance without requiring capital-intensive mechanical systems.

What do you see as the biggest opportunities in the coming year for Lucas Systems?

The biggest opportunity for Lucas Systems in the coming year is the widening gap between what the market now demands, adaptable, intelligent warehouse automation, and what many organisations currently have deployed. According to our research with Wakefield Research, 77% of supply chain leaders say at least half of their warehouse systems are too rigid, 92% faced major unplanned disruptions in the past year, and 72% say reconfiguring automation in response to change would take considerable effort. That creates a significant opening for Lucas. Our position as a Market Leader in Warehouse Optimisation Software, recognised for Jennifer’s human-centric AI and rapid ROI, gives us a distinct competitive advantage as more organisations realise software-driven optimisation can deliver flexibility that fixed systems cannot.

As markets continue to shift, Lucas sits at the centre of need and execution. Customers are under pressure to improve performance, add functionality and adapt quickly, but often cannot wait for costly capital projects or major system replacements. Lucas can serve as the connective tissue across the operation, helping customers extend the investments they have already made while improving efficiency, accuracy, visibility and overall warehouse performance.
