Smurfit Westrock was pleased to announce its platinum corporate sponsorship of the Edinburgh Accies Hasbeens team as they embarked on an extraordinary adventure.
The Accies Hasbeens – a team of rugby has-beens and cycling enthusiasts – were ready for a gruelling challenge, the Doddie’s Grand Tour 2025, and Smurfit Westrock are proud to have been sponsoring and supporting them at every stage of this incredible journey. The event saw the remarkable group brave the winter weather and cycle 700 miles across Scotland in just four days, ending their impressive feat in Edinburgh on Saturday, 8th February.
This journey was about more than just the miles. The Accies Hasbeens were coming together in a heartfelt tribute to their late friend and rugby legend, Doddie Weir, and raising money for motor neurone disease (MND) research.
MND is a truly devastating, life-shortening neurological condition that affects the motor neurons of the nervous system. It damages and attacks the nerves, causing messages sent from the brain to the muscles to no longer work. The condition robs individuals of their ability to walk, speak and eat, and MND eventually leads to paralysis.
Six people are diagnosed with MND every day in the UK, with up to 5,000 adults being affected at any one time. Despite MND progressing rapidly, there is still no cure, making the fundraising efforts of the Accies Hasbeens and the Doddie’s Grand Tour 2025 extremely important. Their mission brings hope to those affected and fuels the fight for breakthroughs that could one day end this heartbreaking disease.
