Hörmann Transdek have been awarded the Queens Award for Enterprise: Innovation on three separate occasions and became part of the Hörmann Group in 2021.

James MacDonald, Business Development Manager at Hörmann Transdek speaks to Warehouse & Logistics News.

What are your best-known products and services?

We manufacture and supply a range of specialist modular loading solutions which help remove the headaches logistic professionals face when it comes to lifting and moving goods around their network. These include our V2G (vehicle to ground) lifts for loading any type of vehicle (including double deck trailers) at level-access sites, Double Deck lifts for upgrading traditional docks, our new 6 and 9 cage scissor lifts and mezzanine goods lifts.

Which industry sectors are your customers in, and which ones are growing fastest?

We operate mainly in the logistics and retail sectors, but we are seeing strong demand for our mezzanine goods lifts in self-storage facilities.

Being part of the Hörmann Group also means that we are now able to expand into the European market, with particular focus on our range of loading solutions such as our Double Deck lifts for the loading/unloading of double-deck trailers.

What are your most recent developments?

We have just completed an 18-month investment programme at our Doncaster facility. This has seen us revamp our factory to provide greater efficiency and allow us to better serve our expanding customer base.

Being part of Hörmann has given us access to their specialists who have worked with us and helped re-organise the factory to increase our capacity by 20%.

The beginning of June also saw us hold our first ever Open Day, with both prospective and existing customers being able to tour our new facilities and see live product demonstrations.

Can you tell us about any recent customer contracts?

We are currently working with a leading high street retailer to help upgrade their network to facilitate double-deck deliveries at their stores, this will be a massive game changer for them and help drive forward their business.

We also have a number of government led facilities that we are working on. These sites will all be level access and they need a simple solution that will help service any type of vehicle, that’s where Transdek comes in. Our unique modular design means we turn up with the actual lift which is then ready for use in only 1-2 days.

How does business so far in 2024 compare with previous years? What’s your strategy for succeeding in the current climate?

The first half of 2024 has certainly started well with a healthy, expanding order book for 2024 and beyond.

Our strategy is simple, continue doing what Hörmann Transdek are well known for – providing quality products and innovative solutions, together with expert project management and high levels of individual service.

Are you investing in staff training and skills development?

We have recently launched an apprenticeship scheme developed with the RNN College Group and have taken on three apprentices – two in mechanical engineering working on the shop floor and one in Accounts. Our aim is to build Hörmann Transdek for the future, to develop our younger colleagues and see them grow with the company. Not only do we want them to receive thorough training for their own specific roles, but we want them to have a good understanding of the overall business, so part of their training will also be attending site surveys and working in other departments within the business.
