Floors can be costly but they can be far more costly if neglected, abused or inadequately repaired. What’s more, floor treatments can be more complex than they seem. Warehouse floor neglect is common in the UK, with often costly consequences. A due diligence process and careful choice of supplier after adequate comparisons should prevent nasty surprises and extract the best, tailored solution. Cracks will not form in a floor unless there is some type of restraint; however, cracks will form when the tensile stress exceeds the tensile strength of the concrete, according to the Association of Concrete Industrial Flooring Contractors.

The first thing to think about when designing a mezzanine floor is the required load capacity. Do you need the same capacity across the whole platform, or across all floors in a multi-level solution? If not, it may be possible to use a hybrid mezzanine (constructed from hot-rolled and cold-formed steel) for the areas with higher loading and a cold-formed floor elsewhere, explains Geoff Green, Sales Director for MiTek.

R-tek installed its R-Tiles at the Jaguar Land Rover Factory, a floor of over 5000m2. The R-Tile range is made from hardwearing PVC and does not require a damp proof membrane, screws or adhesive as it has been designed as a loosely laid system with the joins allowing for evaporation, making it a suitable damp-proof floor solution. The interlocking floor tiles require minimal subfloor preparation, can be installed over damp or uneven subfloors, at any temperature and don’t require any time to settle.

As more warehouse floors are installed, it becomes increasingly important that stringent safety standards are maintained.
