Firms in Great Britain who want to access the EU market will increasingly do so through offices based in Northern Ireland, after new rules governing the movement of goods between the two regions were introduced on September 30th. Speaking at the AGM of the Timber Packaging & Pallet Confederation (TIMCON), held in Belfast, Stuart Anderson, Head of Public Affairs, Northern Ireland Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said the country was making preparations to become a “gateway to Europe” as regulations arising from the Windsor Framework come into force.

On 21 Nov 2023, the European Parliament will discuss the proposal for a Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which aims to promote the reuse and recycling of packaging. The European Pallet Association e.V. (EPAL), as an international association with more than 1,600 license partners and national associations in almost all EU countries, supports these goals and the PPWR. The reuse of EPAL Euro pallets in the open EPAL pallet pool has been a prime example of a functioning circular economy for decades and already meets most of the PPWR requirements.

A rackable plastic pallet is exactly that: a plastic pallet that you can place on pallet racking. As the Managing Director of goplasticpallets.com, Jim Hardisty felt compelled to share his thoughts on the Chancellor of the Exchequer’s Autumn Statement on Wednesday 22 November, which included a rise in the Plastic Packaging Tax (PPT). This tax, initially set at £200 per tonne, was increased to £210.82 per tonne on 1st April 2023, and will now see a further increase to £217.85 per tonne from 1st April 2024. “The tax has already been generating significant revenue, raising questions about the need for further increases, especially given that thousands of companies have yet to register for it,” said Hardisty.

It’s great to see the diversity of pallet companies, supplying pallets across the industry to keep logistics moving.
