What’s the most exciting thing about your job?

For me every new enquiry is an opportunity to utilise all of the experience and expertise gained during my 32 years with the company to deliver the best solution for the client.

Who has inspired you most in your career?

In my early career I had the benefit of many “time served” colleagues to support and mentor me as I moved into the field. My sales manager at the time was a guy called Mike Rose whose wealth of knowledge relating to distributor sales and his well-founded confidence in front of customers taught me many valuable lessons which I still draw upon to this day.

If you were an item in a warehouse, what would you be?

An articulated fork truck which, due to its innovative design, enables creative racking schemes where more conventional MHE doesn’t, whilst being utterly dependable with the ability to go anywhere.

If you had your time again, what would you do different?

Continue my education beyond HNC on to a degree and beyond, but life’s like that isn’t it?

What’s your favourite pastime?

I enjoy live music, the theatre, eating out and attending classic car shows (one day I’ll own one of my own).

Do you play a sport, follow a sport or support a team?

Over the years I have enjoyed 5-a-side football and karate, but today its field hockey. I play for a local team, I’m vice-captain of my side and also fixture secretary for the whole club. Hockey is a great sport and the camaraderie amongst team mates and opponents is refreshing.

What’s the most embarrassing thing that’s happened in your career?

The warehouse can be a challenging environment with a constantly changing landscape and I regret that I did overlook possibly the largest building column I have ever encountered during a site survey and when the installation commenced was called back to site to face the music (and the column of course). Needless to say an excellent installation team spared my blushes but colleagues will never let me forget, much to their delight!

Do you have any hidden talents?

Not really, I’m a bit of a perfectionist when decorating which never ceases to disappoint my wife. Other than that I’m a pretty ordinary bloke (I think).

Who would be your favourite party guest?

Morgan Freeman. I’m sure he has lots to say of his career in film and his voice must be one of the best in Hollywood!

What is the greatest luxury in your life?

Sky Q I think, I love watching the Discovery Channel, National Geographic and car shows and I can do all of this where and when I want to.

If you won the Lottery, what would you do?

I only think big on this situation and would make all of my colleagues millionaires, buy the company and put my own spin on it!

Who or what makes you laugh?

Ever since Phoenix Nights, Peter Kay has been my comedy superstar and one day I’d love to see him live (but we all know how difficult getting tickets will be, don’t we?).

What’s your dream holiday?

Route 66, no timescale or itinerary, a convertible muscle car and the wife.

What’s your favourite music album?

Being of a certain age it all started with rap, then electro, moving onto electronica at the time of New Order’s album Substance 1987. But like most things musical tastes evolve over the years, don’t they?

What’s your favourite movie or Netflix series?

Shawshank Redemption and Breaking Bad.

What would be your advice to someone thinking about coming into the industry (apart from “don’t do it”)?

For me it all started in the design office which in my view is the perfect foundation to base a career upon. In my experience most people I meet on customer sites already know plenty about storage solutions and I have always found that my technical background and experience in design gives me all the confidence on site I have ever needed. Be true to yourself and honest, integrity goes a long way within trade circles and I hope I am thought of in this way.
