Lift truck operators need to be aware that the permitted uses for rebated fuels, including red diesel, will be reduced from 1 April. Those no longer permitted to use rebated fuel will need to use fuels (diesels or biofuels) upon which full excise duty is paid, such as white diesel. For applications no longer permitted to use rebated fuel, the fuel in a vehicle or machine and in any storage tanks, should be used up before 1 April. However, fuel tanks do not need to be flushed, except where the equipment is switching between permitted and non-permitted uses. Storage tanks will only require flushing if they are owned/operated by an RDCO (Registered Dealer in Controlled Oil). However, stocks in storage tanks that cannot be used up prior to 1 April cannot be used for non-allowed purposes, although they can be sold to an RDCO or disposed of through an approved waste oil company.

Toyota Material Handling UK has launched a new range of electric counterbalance forklifts. Designed for both indoor and heavy-duty outdoor applications, the Traigo80 80-volt electric counterbalance range is offered with a choice of lithium-ion, lead-acid or fuel cell power solutions. Customers that opt for lithium-ion batteries can select two intelligent energy packs based on Toyota’s own high-density lithium-ion battery solutions.

One common cost-reduction measure often suggested by UniCarriers representatives is in the charging area. Charging cables damaged by trucks running over them, means trucks can’t be charged overnight, and may not last a full shift the next day. A simple solution is retractor cables – these use pulleys mounted above the chargers, which lift the charging cable off the floor when they are not in use.

The AME-OP, which Combilift has supplied to its customer Multihog, is a stand-on electric powered model that combines the advantages of a narrow aisle articulated forklift and an order picker for versatile operation. A main feature is the step-through operator compartment with a low floor height of just 280mm. This enables convenient single step access from both sides of the truck which speeds up order picking compared to the operator having to get in and out from a seated position.

To keep costs down, logistics businesses can consider using their Hyster lift trucks for several different purposes, the company says. Certain attachments feature quick release hooks so that different attachments can be easily used on the same truck at different times. For instance, Intelligent Carton Clamps may be designed to automatically select the correct clamping pressure, reducing risk of damage.

One is confident the material handling industry will meet the challenges of red diesel reform and is set for a prosperous future
