Walkers Transport is delighted to announce its new Warehouse to Wheels scheme, which gives aspiring drivers a route into full-time careers.

Warehouse to Wheels is a fully-funded two-year course with an optional third which covers all areas of warehousing and transport, as well as offering an £18,000 starting salary which rises with successful completion of each year.

With the average age of HGV drivers increasing, Walkers are intent on bringing that number back down again by launching the scheme to target young, energetic professionals whose vision matches that of the company: to succeed and have fun whilst doing so.

Due to lockdowns and EU nationals returning home as a result of the implementation of IR35 reforms in the Private Sector, the logistics industry faces a shortage of 30,000 drivers, which equates to one tenth of all HGV drivers working in the United Kingdom.

Walkers are therefore doing their upmost to combat the chronically-low employment numbers by offering aspiring drivers a risk-free route to full-time work. Walkers will pay every apprentice’s course fees and offer a starting post-scheme salary of £28,000.

The Warehouse to Wheels programme also gives the next generation of drivers the opportunity to earn while they learn. In the first year, all apprentices will gain a Warehouse and Storage qualification and their FLT Licence before aspiring to an LGV Apprenticeship – including Cat C and C+E licences and DCPC – in year two.

The final, and optional, twelve months will see all learners work towards the completion of a Transport Supervisor Advanced Apprenticeship, through which they will acquire their Road Haulage CPC, Team Leading Level 3 Diploma and CILT membership.

Lead Driver Trainer, John Burbeck highlights what a great opportunity the Warehouse to Wheels programme is for someone looking to enter the transport and logistics industry.

“I joined Walkers as a driver with a training background, so I was given responsibility to show people the ropes. This course is a great opportunity for aspiring drivers to enhance their skillset and learn the business inside out.

“Being part of the Walkers team is like having an open door. Everyone is so open and always offers support when needed. The guarantee of a job at the end of the programme shows that Walkers are committed to providing a secure future for its employees.”

After successfully finishing the course, all apprentices will have a full-time job lined up and a long, fruitful career ahead of them. Warehouse to Wheels isn’t just an programme, it bridges the gap between education and work. No successful candidate will leave Walkers without an offer on the table.

If you are interested in being paid an ever-increasing wage whilst learning your trade in a fun, professional environment, look no further than Walkers’ Warehouse to Wheels scheme.
