The managing director of a global logistics specialists has appeared alongside former cricketer Sir Andrew Strauss in a podcast about leadership.
Nick Collins, managing director of CTS Logistics in Berkshire, spoke to the Leaders Council of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, which is interviewing figures from across the nation in an attempt to understand what leadership means today.
He told host Matthew O’Neill that leadership was about giving clear direction, both strategically and tactically, as well as empowering your workforce “to be the best they can possibly be”.
CTS works with demanding organisations, in difficult circumstances, handling dangerous cargo, and is trusted by governments, defence industry giants, high consequence medical providers and the nuclear industry to keep their specialist operations moving.
Mr Collins was asked how CTS had coped with Covid-19, how he thinks the workplace has changed over the past decade, and how leadership has inspired his career.
He told Mr O’Neill that the confidence and leadership CTS shows its customers, who move difficult and dangerous freight types, is something he works to convey to his workforce, and that there is a lot of self-reflection involved.
Mr Collins said: “I find that I have surrounded myself with some great people with lots of different viewpoints.
“I am very open to challenge and criticism of how we can improve something to make it more personal.”
Mr O’Neill said: “Hosting a show like this, where you speak to genuine leaders who have been there and done it, either on a national stage or within a crucial industry sector, is an absolute honour.”
Lord Blunkett, chairman of The Leaders Council of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, said: “I think the most informative element of each episode is the first part, where Matthew O’Neill is able to sit down with someone who really gets how their industry works and knows how to make their organisation tick.
