Returning after lockdown offers a chance to enhance safety across the board.
The talk is of business returning to a new normal, but maybe it should be about a new better.
Mike Jones of RDD – UK importers for Mitsubishi Forklift Trucks – explains: “As we return things are going to be very different and, in some cases, very difficult. But in many ways this presents a rare opportunity for businesses to improve efficiency, reduce costs and save lives.
“The rules for returning to work may focus on keeping a safe distance to prevent infection… but this approach can also prevent accidents, especially to pedestrians working in close proximity to forklifts.”
Jones believes that change begins with risk assessments and ends with reviewing layouts, procedures and equipment. “A basic aim should be to separate forklifts and pedestrians entirely,” he says. “Create one-way systems, ideally based on existing ‘desire lines’. In areas where forklifts operate, ban staff unless they genuinely need to be there. Introduce barriers, guard rails or kerbs wherever people and trucks occupy the same space, install safety zone lighting, and impose speed limits.
“Most important of all, focus on what works for you. The survey specialists in our network are used to working with companies of all sizes and in all sectors, helping them arrive at solutions that are totally site-specific… and very cost-effective. For many businesses, budgets will be tight right now, so it’s crucial to recognise what you don’t need as well as the things that you do.
“We recommend starting with an audit. Have your operations or load types changed? Are your current trucks fit for purpose? Equipment is very cheap when compared to the cost of an operator struggling with the wrong kit, so it pays to make sure they have the tools to get the job done… along with the appropriate skillset.
“In a world that has seen so much change, it’s also important to future-proof your decisions. If, for example, you run LP gas or diesel trucks, be aware that legislation will require new trucks to meet Stage 5 emission standards so check before you buy.
“Maybe it’s time to switch motive power altogether and look at the new generation of indoor-outdoor electric trucks? Easily outperforming the equivalent IC engine models — including on whole-life costs — you’ll find trucks like the award-winning Mitsubishi EDiA have more in common with a Tesla car than a traditional counterbalance.
“Still using hand pallet trucks? You could be in breach of HSE guidelines, especially if those trucks are used frequently or to shift heavy loads. Switching to a budget-priced power pallet truck will immediately enable greater social distancing and improve productivity since fewer people are required to move the same volume of goods. They will also reduce absenteeism caused by strain injuries.
