Our first question this month asks about protective Mesh and the second is asking for information on Mobile Racking.

Protective Mesh

Q. We are an end user of storage racking. We are looking to have fitted protective mesh at the back of the racks to stop the items from been pushed through and falling to the floor when they are being placed and removed from the racking.

The question I have is that is there a standard of meshing and the way it is fixed to the racking that the installers of the meshing should follow? If yes how do I get a copy of such a standard?

A. Mesh or netting fitted to the back of a rack is usually referred to as “anti-collapse mesh”.

At present there is no SEMA code for this product.

Mobile Racking

Q. I require information on the checking of mobile racking to complete a risk assessment. Is there a procedure for checking mobile racking?

A. SEMA does not have specific requirements for the inspection of pallet racking on a mobile base so you should refer to the SEMA recommendations for the inspection of racking.

Documents such as the SEMA Code of Practice for the Use of static pallet racking https://www.sema.org.uk/codes-of-practice/publications/more/8343/page/1/code-of-practice-for-the-use-of-static-pallet-racking & the SEMA Guide to the conduct of racking and shelving inspections https://www.sema.org.uk/codes-of-practice/publications/more/8352/page/1/guide-to-the-conduct-of-racking-and-shelving-inspections as well as the HSE publication Warehousing and storage: A guide to health and safety (HSG76) https://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/books/hsg76.htm are useful references.

As far as the mobile base itself is concerned this is a piece of machinery and you should refer to the manufacturer/ supplier recommendations with respect to inspection and maintenance.

These courses are normally held at the SEMA headquarters but arrangements can be made to hold them at the delegates’ premises.

SEMA Approved Rack Inspectors Qualification

This qualification is aimed at professionals who conduct rack surveys as an integral and significant part of their duties.
