Lee Horton, Managing Director of Space Productiv spoke to Warehouse & Logistics News.

What are your best-known products and services?

Space Productiv are best known as a manufacturer of complex mezzanine structures, together with a wide range of racking products. Our customers recognise that as storage system manufacturers we can offer a solution to meet every need – whether that’s optimising existing space, installing mezzanine floors or a temporary pop-up warehouse.

What new products/services will you be launching next year?

In the last 12 months we have expanded our mezzanine flooring range and launched our modular mezzanine system, a pre-designed flexible system which can be used to create extra space quickly.

Space Productiv have supplied temporary storage in one form or another for many years. However, we have recently seen an increase in demand for pop-up storage as customers look to generate extra warehousing capacity in a short amount of time to meet fluctuating demand. Next year we will be broadening our range of pop-up warehousing and offering a range of cost-effective rental options.

Our client had four 10m high Fan Decks that required constant access for servicing and general maintenance. Their previous solution was using temporary scaffold towers or MEWP’s for access. Following recent safety audits these methods were deemed inappropriate and a more permanent solution was required.

Space Productiv designed, manufactured and installed a 10m tall 3-tier galvanised mezzanine structure with mesh decking, complete with 6 access staircases and over 140m of handrail and kick rail. The solution has provided a permanently safe access to all levels, whilst reducing the time taken for servicing and maintenance.

What industry sectors do you see offering you the most potential next year?

There are currently two key elements driving growth. Firstly, the demand in e-commerce continues to create the need for extra warehousing and racking systems. Secondly, clients are continuously looking to drive efficiency and productivity. This may be by advising on the better use of an existing system, providing short term rental options, or creating additional space to improve housekeeping and safety.

Are you investing in new premises over the next 12 months? What about recruitment, staff development and training?

Following our rebrand as Space Productiv we are working towards a 4-year growth programme. To meet these growth plans we have already recruited a new Senior Project Manager and we are currently looking to expand our design team. We are also developing a new office block, due for completion by the middle of next year, to support our growing business.

How do your products help businesses become cleaner, recycle more and reduce their carbon footprint?

Space Productive are accredited to ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management System. As a manufacturer we take every step to ensure we supply products as environmentally as possible, while minimising waste and unnecessary packaging. This was further enhanced this year when we installed a Biomass boiler, replacing our oil-fired heating system.

To avoid wasting resources where products are only required for a short duration, we offer rental / return options or look to relocate existing products. And, at the end of their serviceable life our racking systems can be completely recycled.

How have business conditions changed and how have you reacted?

We find that customers are now looking for providers who can deliver a complete design, manufacture, supply and installation service. In fact, this changing business environment was also a factor in our decision to rebrand as Space Productiv in August this year. Demonstrating that we are much more than a racking manufacturer and have a wealth of in-house expertise on offer.

Uncertainty in the market and short-term stock piling has also generated real interest in our mezzanine floors and pop-up warehousing.

Do your solutions reduce manual handling and physical lifting?

At Space Productiv we have over two decades of experience in designing storage solutions to improve productivity and enhance safety. We work with the client to fully understand the products stored, its usage and how it flows through the warehouse to minimises any stock movements. Our designs facilitate the use of existing, or newly proposed lifting equipment, but for those awkward situations we can manufacture bespoke handling solutions.

How do you help customers make optimum use of their existing warehouse space?

Without a doubt this is achieved through the skill and expertise of the people we employ. Our storage and material handling experts will recommend solutions that address storage and handling problems and can be implemented quickly and cost effectively.

How much do your solutions and products contribute to warehouse safety?

Health & safety in the warehouse is very important to us and is one of the reasons why we are committed to being a Full SEMA Member. SEMA is the industry body responsible for the safe design, installation and use of storage equipment manufactured and supplied by its members. Through SEMA we can ensure that our products are some of the very best on the market and are continuously up to date with current legislation. As a member Space Productiv are engaged in SEMA’s Quality Assurance Scheme and our products are subjected to independent product assessments carried out by the University of Salford. Our products are also CE approved.

To what extent are you drivers of technological change?

We are currently working on an exciting project exploring how to make our cantilever racking ‘smart’. Smart racking aims to optimise the storage space required for long or irregular shaped products and therefore reduce the amount of racking required. It is envisaged that this will seamlessly link to other third-party lifting equipment.

How futureproof and flexible are your solutions as businesses change?

As a manufacturer of storage systems, we are well placed to spot emerging trends in the market, and we have the capability in-house to adapt our products and services to meet changing demands quickly. We engage with our customers to understand their ‘pain’ points within the warehouse and continuously feed this back into our business. We regularly design and manufacture bespoke systems to meet the client’s needs more exactly.
