Welcome to the October 15th Warehouse & Logistics News. The weather outside is cooling, but in Britain’s warehouses and distribution chains things are hotting up as we head towards the Christmas rush. To help you keep pace, in this issue we have features on Multimodal Logistics, Warehouse Lighting and Warehouse IT. Our Multimodal feature looks at the alternative options for moving goods as our roads get more congested; Warehouse Lighting illuminates the increasingly important area of smart lighting; and Warehouse IT delivers the latest news about RFID, barcodes, readers, scanners, tags, labels and handheld technology.

This W&LN Digital Version is optimised to work on any computer, tablet or mobile device.

FrontWe also interview two leading British companies, Coxhoe Service & Supply, one of the North East’s leading industrial cleaning equipment suppliers, and Thorlux Lighting, whose British-made LED luminaires and Smart control systems set the pace in industrial applications.

Postal services continue to be essential logistics providers for consumers sending parcels, but getting to the post office while it’s open can be a struggle. As our front page lead story reveals, Citizen Europe’s label printers have proved the ideal solution for Austrian Post, who use four separate Citizen printers in their self-service terminals, enabling customers to send and collect letters and parcels outside traditional opening times. Austrian Post customers now enjoy significantly shorter waiting times even on busy days, and can buy stamps and send parcels seven days a week around the clock in stores with foyer and self-service facilities.

As part of our Warehouse Lighting feature we interview Mark Austin, Sales Director of Thorlux Lighting, the designer, manufacturer and distributor of the Thorlux range of luminaires, manufactured continuously since 1936. These days Thorlux stands out among lighting suppliers as one of only a few domestic manufacturers making products for the British market, and providing professional lighting and control systems for commercial, industrial and architectural applications, backed by nationwide support, plus design and commissioning. Thorlux offer two key types of LED luminaire for industrial use, Solow LED and Kanby LED Mirror. Their Smart control system is the most flexible around and offers energy savings of 70%.

Looking for signs of economic recovery? Coxhoe Service & Supply are seeing a rise in industrial cleaning equipment sales after several years of customers holding back on buying new machines. Established over 30 years ago by Kevin Jackson, Coxhoe Service & Supply is one of North East England’s leading suppliers of industrial cleaning equipment. Recognised service centres for major manufacturers such as Nilfisk-Alto and Karcher, they offering a one stop shop for sales, service and long and short term hire or leasing of a full range of equipment covering all aspects of cleaning. At present just 10-15% of Coxhoe’s business is directly associated with the warehouse sector: expect that to change soon.
