Acqsys Supply Chain Solutions is a unique asset management business, providing a recovery service for manufacturers, distributors and retailers who deliver products in re-usable transit equipment like roll cages, stillages, totes, kegs, etc.
We find it, repossess it, repatriate it and take repeat offenders to court.
We are currently working with the major players in the dairy industry and are building a growing client base among the national retailers.
What brought you to this industry?
I was lucky enough to get on the graduate scheme with Boots and I’ve always stayed in or close to Logistics; when I haven’t been running parking or water cooler companies that is.
What’s the most exciting thing about your job?
I get most fun out of starting and developing new ventures in areas where most people don’t look. The skills you need aren’t any more special than anyone else’s; it’s all about searching out new opportunities, usually at the grubby end of the scale.
Who inspired you most in your career?
Charismatic leaders like John Harvey and, despite the recent film, Margaret Thatcher in the difficult days.
If you were an item in a warehouse, what would you be?
The Canteen. It’s where you hear what’s really going on.
If you had to do it all over again, what would you do different?
Start my own business earlier. I was successful in corporate life but I have to say it was despite myself. It’s much more rewarding doing your own thing.
What’s the most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to you at work?
I once deposited half a load of pop on the yard as I dropped the clutch on an Alpine Soft Drinks vehicle. A lot of glass and sticky substance for me, the new depot manager, to clean up.
Who or what makes you laugh?
Family Guy. Simple as that.
Do you have any hidden talents?
Can’t paint, can’t draw, can’t play any musical instrument but I can write a bit. I’ve been forced by the marketing team to start blogging and I quite enjoy it.
Who would be your favourite party guest?
Ian Dury, but I’m a bit late.
What is the greatest luxury in your life?
Having a good life:work balance which allows me to work hard at growing the business yet finding time to play.
What is your favourite guilty pleasure?
Big fat cigars which I can only smoke on the roof terrace.
Do you have any secret ambitions?
To sail around the Mediterranean.
What’s your dream holiday destination?
If not sailing round the Med then sailing round the Caribbean.
What are your three favourite movies of all time?
Tin Cup, The Cruel Sea and Seven Samurai.
What is your favourite book of all time?
Catch 22.
What’s your favourite pastime?
Cooking, with a nice glass of something to hand.
If you won the Lottery, what would you do?
Start another business designed to get youngsters doing something other than wanting to be bankers.
What would be your advice to someone thinking about coming into the industry (apart from “don’t do it”)?
I would tell them the world has changed and the time of the ‘personal franchise’ has arrived, replacing the long serving employee. Develop a skill base, stay mobile and build a reputation. The industry will come looking for you.
