With an event this size the two biggest warehousing challenges must surely be storing everything, and keeping track of it. In this issue we have two scheduled features that will appeal to Olympics logistics professionals and others. In Storage Solutions, we look at maximising efficient use of warehouse space with the latest storage solutions in pallet racking, cantilever racking and shelving. The Warehouse I.T. feature covers RFID, barcodes, readers, scanners, labels, handheld technology and other technology in today’s modern warehouses.

To help keep everything moving on the right lines, we also have exclusive interviews with ROCOL Site Safety Systems, a leading provider of premier quality line marking solutions, and wheels and castors experts the Baz-Roll International Group (BIL), which offers a single source manufacturing service covering all aspects of wheels and castors, and materials handling equipment.

BIL’s Castors & Wheels division supplies a complete range of castors, solid and pneumatic wheels for trucks and trolleys, from light institutional to heavy industrial castors, and from lightweight and pneumatic wheels through to heavy solid steel and cast iron wheels. Their sister division BIL Materials Handling supplies a range of product handling equipment, the best known being its AluTruk aluminium sack truck, supplied to Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Ocado among others. BIL’s biggest overall strength is their ability to come up with solutions to customers’ problems, whether it’s a specialist modular aluminium hand-truck stair-climber for Dolby Medical, or replacement castors for a working platform for the last flying Vulcan aircraft.

Formed in 1878 and based in Leeds, ROCOL are now part of the ITW Corporation. ROCOL’s product portfolio includes car park paint kit and edge line marking applicators, spot marketing paint, anti-slip panels and decking, anti-slip coatings and speed bumps, joined in the past 12 months by an innovative range of water-based products.

After all the build up let’s hope the Games are a roaring success all round, a far cry from the nightmare comedy of ‘2012’, the spoof TV series they inspired. Whatever happens in other aspects of the Games, no one can blame the UK’s logistics people, who have put in an outstanding effort to help deliver a truly world class event. Hey, Lord Seb – when you’re dishing out the medals to your sporty mates, don’t forget Logistics Team GB!
