Pregis Protective Packaging Europe has devised a bespoke packaging solution for the safe transport of steering wheels for Czech automotive supplier TRW. The enhanced protection has helped to eliminate damage and claims during export of the parts to China and Argentina.

Previously the steering wheels were placed in bubble bags before being laid horizontally in boxes. However, the pressure of the wheels on top of each other often caused surface scratches and damage even with the bubble protection.

The Pregis solution uses the company’s laminated technical foam, Polylam, to create special inserts ‘racks’. These are placed in the box and contain a row of cut-outs into which each steering wheel is inserted. The cut-outs hold the wheels at the top and bottom and both sides to keep them totally secure. Separating each wheel in this way means that there is no danger of them causing surface damage to each other during transit, while the lightweight closed-cell construction of the Polylam material provides superior cushioning and protection.

The Pregis solution was developed by the company’s Czech operation, led by its experienced design Ing. Václav Doležal. The TRW transport container recently won an award in the Shipping and Industrial Containers category of the Czech Packaging Association’s 2011 Packaging of the Year Awards.

Pregis Polylam is a versatile and durable material that has been developed for a wide range of applications and offers customised dimensions to increase fabrication efficiency.

“We are delighted with the solution that Pregis CZ has devised for us,” comments a TRW spokesperson. “Maintaining product quality is vital during the distribution process and the Pregis pack plays an important part in helping to support our company image.”
