Welcome to the August 15th issue of Warehouse & Logistics News. While much of Britain is off on holiday and many high streets are recovering from the recent riots, the warehouse and logistics industry has held its ground. Despite a few well publicised casualties, the supply chains have carried on working 24/7, keeping the goods we need moving rain or shine (while we’re on the subject, let’s have a bit more sunshine, please!)

To help you stay up to date on what’s best in products and services for the industry, in this issue we’ve got our quarterly feature on Fork Trucks and features on Floors & Floor Care, and Conveying & Sortation. We’ve also got exclusive interviews with Clientbase Fulfilment, the specialist provider of outsourced home shopping fulfilment services, and conveyor specialists European Conveyor Systems (ECS) and SDI Group.

Clientbase Fulfilment has had the same fixed objective since its formation in the early days of Internet shopping – to provide specialist outsourced fulfilment services for multi-channel home shopping operations as a one-stop solution. Clientbase Fulfilment’s fulfilment services include contact centre and warehouse services with integrated software for e-commerce, cataloguers, off the page and direct response TV companies, covering business-to-business and business to consumer. CF also offers the same solution in Australia through a recently established joint venture.

SDI Group is a leading British materials handling business specialising in retail apparel hanging and flat sortation. One of the major materials handling success stories of the last few years, to date SDI has installed over 300 sorters across the globe, sorting apparel for major retail customers including Asda George in Lymedale, Staffs, Hugo Boss in Germany, H&M in Belgium, Abercrombie & Fitch on both sides of the Atlantic, and Guess Jeans in Italy.

The European Conveyor Systems/Gebhardt partnership is one of Europe’s leading sources of material handling systems. Their comprehensive portfolio includes extensive carton/tote and pallets handling systems, goods lifts and Automatic Storage & Retrieval Systems. Within their combined range of conveyor systems ECS and Gebhardt offer probably the most effective zero pressure accumulation conveyor system available, encompassing carton/tote handling conveyor and pallet handling conveyor systems.

Finally, in our exclusive series on the history of the fork lift truck, written by James Brindley, curator of the National Fork Truck Heritage Centre, we’re up to 1972, the year of the Watergate Hotel break in, which led to President Nixon’s impeachment. In our industry the big news of the day was the formation of the Forklift Hire Industry Technical Association, the predecessor of the present Fork Lift Truck Association. By the way, the Heritage Centre is near Alfreton, Derbyshire. It’s open most Sundays and Bank holidays, so if you’re in the area, why not pay a visit?

Enjoy the summer, and happy reading.
