Leading logistics consultancy, Davies & Robson, has completed a project to optimise warehouse utilisation and efficiency for Fisher Outdoor Leisure, effectively removing the need to relocate to larger premises.
Fisher Outdoor Leisure is one of the UK’s leading distributors of cycles, cycle accessories, components and apparel, supplying major retailers and 2,000 independent bike shops in the UK.
Fisher’s National Distribution Centre stocks some 7,500 products, handles 300 orders per day and provides a next day service to its customers.
In order to improve service standards and reduce costs, Fisher appointed Davies & Robson to review its warehouse operations to determine the optimum design and working practices, together with identification and definition of the technology required to support these.
Following a detailed review, Davies & Robson identified a series of improvements, including the identification and disposal of slow moving and obsolete stock, the optimised location of product within the warehouse, enhanced storage utilisation and presentation and system changes to improve the efficiency and accuracy of order picking and other key warehouse functions.
To maximise the benefits provided by these physical improvements, Davies & Robson also carried out a gap analysis of the existing warehouse management system, produced a functional IT specification for its replacement and assisted with the identification of potential WMS suppliers.
Prior to the review, Fisher Outdoor had considered moving the operation to a larger warehouse, however, as a result of the improvements, the existing facility now has sufficient space and operational capability to cope with continued growth.
Ian Parker, Finance & Operations Director for Fisher Outdoor said: “Davies & Robson’s approach was both professional and pragmatic – they quickly got to grips with the situation and put forward a logical, properly justified plan of action which clearly addressed our requirements. The project was also completed ontime and within budget.
“Previously the warehouse struggled to keep pace with the demands placed upon it – as a result of the review and recommendations, we now have a more efficient warehousing operation which can support our current requirements and future growth.”
