PF Whitehead Logistics has taken advantage of South London Business’ Apprenticeship Training Agency to provide a young person with experience of a busy logistics and distribution operation at its Croydon depot, which handles imports of wine from Italy and other European countries.

The Government backed initiative is designed to help the logistics sector to overcome the challenges and administration of taking on an apprentice by assuming all the responsibilities of an employer. SLB Logistics spends time working with employers to understand their business needs and match those to the skills of the apprentice.

“I cannot speak highly enough of the SLB Logistics scheme,” says Peter Whitehead, Managing Director of PF Whitehead Logistics. “They matched the apprentice to our business, took away all the headaches of administering the work placement and carried out the NVQ training on the job”.

Peter Whitehead also praised the commitment and attitude of his 18 year old apprentice Tom Coyne describing him as a ‘breath of fresh air.’ “Tom is a good lad who wants to work and through his apprenticeship is learning about all aspects of our business,” added Peter.

After nine months Tom will gain a full apprenticeship which will help him secure full time employment in the future.

Whitehead Logistics operates 500,000 sq ft of warehousing with a major site near Croydon and operates 60 vehicles and provide, national, regional and local distribution, home delivery and pre-retail services for a number of blue chip clients.
