Balluff’s direct metal-mount “FERROIDENT” RFID system is designed for track-and-trace applications in manufacturing, assembly or closed-loop logistics processes.

The system uses a non-contact, ISO 15693-compliant passive data carrier technology, which allows the RFID tag to be mounted directly on any alloy or metal surface without interference or loss in range.

The FERROIDENT tags and heads offer a range of 52 mm to 65 mm, regardless of the alloy content of the metal. They work on aluminum, which tends to cause the most loss in range for passive RFID. The tags are contained in a housing to allow flexible mounting and can operate in temperatures ranging from -25°C to as high as 130°C for up to 1,000 hours at ambient operating temperature. Being passive requiring no batteries, means these tags are maintenance-free.

Two industrial head options include: a self-contained processor and read/write head with a built-in RS-232 serial interface; and a read/write head in an identical housing for connection to any of Balluff’s remote processors. Using a remote processor expands the system’s communication options to include DeviceNet, Profibus, Ethernet/IP and TCP/IP, Modbus-IP or ProfiNet Ethernet bus.

The FERROIDENT tags can be mounted directly on metal pallets, or carts used in storage/retrieval applications and closed-loop logistics systems. Additionally, they can be mounted magnetically for temporary use with the aid of a magnetic strip attached to the back of the tag, which is especially beneficial when tote/bin or cart assignments change.
