The Leeds-based company, which designs, manufactures, installs and maintains the Matadoor range, has worked with the supermarket giant to provide an energy barrier for the new freezer upgrade on site. Five Eiger Doors in total have been installed at the depot as part of this project, one being a huge 20m sq door.
Sainsbury’s required reliable, low maintenance doors which would reduce temperature change in its upgraded freezer area. Union’s automatic fast acting freezer doors open and close at high speed to combat the problem of cold loss and heat ingress.
The Eiger doors, which operate via radar motion sensors, are open for the minimum amount of time possible before closing automatically. This keeps the internal temperature constant, preventing the freezer having to work harder to maintain the low temperature. This eliminates the build up of frost and ice on the door blade and around the freezer opening.
The door also incorporates a patented dehumidified air circulatory system that removes the moisture that causes ice to form and keeps the drive and working parts dry and clean. Another feature is that the door operates just as effectively on the freezer side of openings should headroom be restricted or space be limited on the ambient side, as was the case at the Sainsbury’s depot.
Sainsbury’s was a major target for Union Industries due to its position as a top UK retailer. Union’s team of technical specialists established a relationship with Sainsbury’s to promote the benefits and operational advantages of the Eiger Door. Their efforts were rewarded when Sainsbury’s, seeking alternatives to their previous warehouse doors, chose the Eiger doors.
Jim Bristow, Sainsbury’s Operations Support Manager for Logistics, Strategy & Development said: “Saving energy is very important to Sainsbury’s so the Eiger doors were an obvious choice when we required new doors for our Elstree depot.
“We have been very impressed with the quality and reliability of the Eiger doors, and the service of Union Industries. There was insufficient space to mount the doors on the chilled dock side of the cold store, as is standard, but this was not a problem to Union Industries, who rose to the challenge; installing the doors on the inside the freezer instead – and they work perfectly.”
Gary Bareham, Technical Sales Manager at Union Industries, said: “Our rapid roll doors offer real solutions to the challenges business face to be energy efficient. Sainsbury’s joins the other high-profile clients who use our doors, meaning we now supply almost all the UK supermarket retailers. These companies all using our products demonstrates how our range is becoming synonymous with solving issues of temperature consistency and energy saving in the retail distribution sector.”
