What’s the most exciting thing about your job?
The daily challenges that arise from the constantly changing market we operate in. One day we can be discussing supply of 500 hand pallet trucks and the next day we can be discussing how to alleviate a clients particular handling problem offering a “bespoke solution.”
If you were an item in a warehouse, what would you be?
That’s easy, a humble hand pallet truck, “large enough to cope, small enough to care!” Handling would be more difficult without me!
What brought you to this industry?
A long, long time ago, 1983 to be exact, I started with a broom and a pair of overalls in a small factory watching handling equipment being made. I thought it looked interesting and after I passed my driving test began pacing the streets of Birmingham (and other cities) looking for customers to buy the handling equipment I saw being made… I really never looked back.
If you had to do it all over again, what would you do different?
Hindsight is a wonderful thing and there are many small adjustments which if I had a crystal ball we probably would have implemented prior to an event, but I don’t so I didn’t. However, the whole objective is to “make it as easy as possible for the client to solve a problem using our equipment which in turn save them time and money” so what I would do now IS PUT IT UP IN BIG LETTERS JUST TO GET THE MESSAGE OUT THERE!!
What’s your favourite pastime?
Last year I finally obtained my private pilots licence and when time permits I love to go flying.
Do you have any hidden talents?
Closet DJ.
Who would be your favourite party guest?
Lord Sugar – Gritty, determined and entertaining.
What is the greatest luxury in your life?
My Family, they cost a fortune but give me great pleasure.
If you won the Lottery, what would you do?
I would become a philanthropist.
Who or what makes you laugh?
My friends and colleagues make me laugh. Whatever I do or try I always look on the positive side with a humorous overview. You can’t go through life being miserable. You can be serious and happy or even seriously happy.
Do you have any secret ambitions?
It’s a secret, but we’re getting there!
What’s your favourite holiday destination?
Maldives, nowhere else comes close.
What’s your favourite music album?
I like a cross section, but particularly like Travis, Keane, & Robbie. Todays pick has to be the original Cee Lo Green “Forget You” (Its sublime you know!)
What’s your favourite movie?
Saving Grace… British Comedy at its best.
Who or what do you detest the most?
You know who you are!!
What would be your advice to someone thinking about coming into the industry (apart from “don’t do it”)?
Know your product and your market. Know your stuff, Know your customer.
