w2r-completed-doorsIndustrial door specialist Stertil Stokvis has been chosen to supply more than 250 doors and shutters to two landmark waste management projects in a contract worth nearly £1.5 million.

Waste 2 Resources is currently constructing two state-of-the-art waste treatment facilities in Leyland and Thornton in Lancashire in partnership with waste processing specialist Global Renewables to deliver the new groundbreaking waste management contract for Lancashire County Council and Blackpool Council.

Global Renewables’ patented UR-3R® Process harnesses new technology to maximise re-use, recycling and redistribution of waste. As the first projects of this kind in the UK, they tick all the boxes for Government targets on reducing landfill and meeting recycling aims. The sites will generate their own power through processes and will sort, redistribute or compost the vast majority of the waste received. Stertil Stokvis has been awarded the contract to supply external doors and shutters at the sites, including its Ultra Tough M & I Doors, Insulated Roller Shutters and Personnel Doors.

The Ultra Tough M & I Door has been designed and developed to offer reliable performance in the most rugged industrial applications. The heavy duty side frames, thick rubber curtain and patented Windlok design form a near-airtight seal and can resist extreme wind pressures up to hurricane force. The Windlok system features a special rubber profile incorporated into each vertical edge of the door curtain. When the heavy duty front channel is closed, the Windlok is tightly secured. As wind pressure is put on the door area, the door panel locks into place. The more pressure, the better the seal yet the door will still operate smoothly.

All models in the Ultra Tough Doors range are constructed from high strength structural steel and its self-supporting design eliminates stress on building walls and ensures that installation is much simpler and quicker. Most competitive models rely upon a complicated combination of springs, sprockets, chains and reducers to help lift the door. By contrast, the M & I Door’s simple yet effective design incorporates a direct drive motor and a frequency converter to provide ‘soft’ start and stop operation thereby eliminating shock and wear to the gearbox. Significantly, the Ultra Strong Curtain is warranted for the life of the door – the thick two-layer SBR and high tensile strength polyester fabric provides superb resilience in harsh operating environments.

“Stertil’s doors needed to meet extremely high specifications of wind resistance and noise reduction – an important consideration at these sites,” says Mark Fisher, senior quantity surveyor of the projects’ main contractor, Bovis Lend Lease. “We were also impressed by their high speed operation and their reputation for quality, reliability and durability.”

“This is an exciting project to be involved with,” says Andrew Georgiou of Stertil Stokvis. “We are confident that the successful launch of these landmark Waste 2 Resources projects will pave the way for many more such sites nationwide and will provide the benchmark for local authorities across the country.”
