Pregis Protective Packaging Europe has launched a pioneering biodegradable film for use with the company’s Airspeed™ air cushioning void fill systems, offering an environmentally-friendly solution for the effective protection of products during transit.
The EP-Flex™ Renew™ film can be used with the full range of Pregis’s Airspeed Systems, which turn flat, easy-to-store high performance film into lightweight, non-abrasive void fill cushioning for a variety of transit and protective packaging requirements.
Like other Airspeed films, EP- Flex™ Renew™ includes recycled content and is 100% recyclable, but the material also contains a natural organic bio-additive that accelerates biodegradation if the film is sent to landfill. The bio-additive attaches itself to the molecular polymer chains that form the plastic so that it is evenly dispersed. After the film is disposed of in landfill, microbes attach to the additives in the plastic, digesting and breaking down the structure. Heat, light and oxygen are not required for EP- Flex™ Renew™ to begin biodegrading. Depending on the environment, complete biodegradation can occur in one to five years.
As with all Airspeed films, the material offers excellent strength and durability, with greater puncture resistance than standard films, outstanding air retention, and high tensile strength that enables it to stretch without breaking. It has also been designed to provide stronger and more resilient seals.

In addition, says Mr Ettarfass, air pillows take up less space and are clean, neat and non-abrasive compared to alternative such as loose-fill peanuts.
