The Sugar Puff’s Brand

Originating from in the 1930’s – “Puffed Wheat” – the original “Sugar Puff’s” was developed to appeal to the family market as a healthy wholegrain breakfast cereal. After 20 years at the breakfast table, the cereal lacked the appeal that would make it a firm favourite within childrens breakfast market and in 1954 the famous “Sugar Puff’s” brand was born. The cereal which consisted of puffed wheat covered in honey soon grew in market share within the breakfast cereal market and with the help of “Jeremy the Bear” in the 60’s, it became a household favourite.

Over the years, the “Sugar Puffs” brand has undergone a number of changes to keep pace with the evolving breakfast market – most notably the introduction of the “Honey Monster” in 1970’s. Made famous by his adverts with Henry McGee and his appearances on the front of the iconic cereal box, the “Honey Monster” helped develop “Sugar Puff’s” into a household name and continues to be a firm favourite at the family breakfast table.

In 2006 Sugar Puffs was acquired by Big Bear Company. Bringing the iconic “Honey Monster” back to the forefront, the company was renamed as “Honey Monster Foods” and the company reinforced the brand with a series of new television ad campaigns and product offerings which included Honey Waffles and Honey Meltz.

An Effective Operational Practice

Behind the strong brand lies a flexible and efficient operational practice which helps “Honey Monster Foods” continue to adapt their product offerings to keep pace with the FMCG market. Continuing to invest heavily in technology, Honey Monster Food’s recently selected leading mobile computing solution providers Belgravium to provide a real time RF system within their Southall based manufacturing facility. The main criteria for the system was to improve traceability, picking speed and overall transparency of their warehouse operations within the “goods in”, “picking” and “putaway” operations. The solution – which utilises the “Rugged by Design” Geneva 6100 handhelds and Monaco 71000 data capture devices was perfect for Honey Monster’s operation. The “Rugged by Design” devices are tough enough to withstand the rigours of the operation environment and have already secured several tangible operational improvements for the company.
