union-logoUnion Industries, the market leading manufacturer of the Matadoor Range of Hi-Speed Doors, is supporting Beacon Packaging’s energy saving commitment at its Aldershot factory.

The company, which already has one of Union’s Bulldoors operating at its facility, needed to address temperature control and heat loss at the rear of its large warehouse, so turned to Union Industries who have installed one of its heavy duty Ramdoor Hi-Speed Doors as the solution.

Beacon Packaging, which is a large independent convertor of board into corrugated boxes and fitments, occupies an approximate 80,000 sq ft modern site in Aldershot. The business has approximately 100 staff working across manufacturing, warehousing, distribution, sales and the various administration departments.

beaconTo facilitate the installation of the Ramdoor before winter, Union assisted the company with the arrangement of an interest-free loan, which was provided by the Carbon Trust. The interest-free loans are designed to pay for themselves through the energy savings that replacement equipment provides. The new door is expected to provide energy savings in excess of £15,000, as well as 62 tonnes of CO2 per year!

Union undertook a detailed survey of the opening, including the differentials in external & internal temperatures, wind speed, door usage and other various factors to formulate a heat loss calculation using its temperature control cost savings matrix to demonstrate the levels of energy savings the installation of the Ramdoor at Beacon Packaging would have on the business. The heat loss calculation system was independently verified by a Carbon Trust appointed consultant.

The body, which has the aim of accelerating the move to a low carbon economy and encouraging the development of commercial low carbon technologies for the future, approved Union’s calculations and agreed a loan repayment plan directly with Beacon Packaging where the energy savings from the Ramdoor installation would cover the monthly loan repayments. The payback period for the loan is under a year, and once the loan is paid off, the savings will go straight back into Beacon Packaging’s bottom line.

Union Industries’ Matadoor Range can play a major role in preventing heat loss from commercial premises. Due to its reliable operation and fast operating speeds, the Matadoor range ensures minimal opportunity for heat loss or the ingress of cold air.

The Ramdoor also provides the additional benefits of Union’s infamous ‘Crash-Out’ facility, which ensure the door remains operable if hit by a vehicle. Common to all doors in the Matadoor Range, they are supplied as standard with fire retardant and anti-static door blades which are beneficial features for all working environments.

Gary Bareham, Union Industries’ Technical Sales Manager, said: “With the cost of energy rising and the drive towards a low-carbon economy, temperature control and heat loss are big issues for businesses operating large premises. Union’s Matadoor Range has been specifically designed to meet these challenges, and with the support of the Carbon Trust there is greater opportunity for companies to address this important issue.”

Richard Horrocks, Operations Manager from Beacon Packaging said: “We have been impressed by the existing Union door we have in operation and knew that they would be our first choice to address the heat loss issue affecting the rear of our building. The interest free loan provided by the Carbon Trust has enabled us to install the door ahead of schedule and meet our heat loss challenge.”

Hugh Jones, Director, Solutions, the Carbon Trust, said: “Beacon Packaging’s use of a Carbon Trust loan to pay for the installation of Union’s energy saving doors has created a win, win, win situation. Beacon Packaging has slashed its energy spend without having to spend company cash upfront on the installation, Union has increased its revenues through the sale and, finally, we at the Carbon Trust are achieving our aim of reducing carbon emissions. We’d urge all other businesses to check their eligibility for the £100m fund available, and to start saving money now!”
