TNT, responsible for transferring documents, packets, parcels and freight worldwide, has been operating an Archive Storage facility at Swadlincote, Derbyshire, for a number of years, allowing public and private sector companies the opportunity to release space within their own facilities resulting in optimum space management for future growth and expansion.
Following considerable company expansion, including a 25 year contract recently awarded to provide archive services to the British Government, SSI Schaefer were called in to discuss storage capabilities that would keep up with TNT’s growing customer base. Having beaten off two other competitors, SSI Schaefer’s Mobile Racking installation, as an extension to the existing warehouse, was agreed upon, allowing TNT to hold over 800,000 storage boxes, 200,000 more than the existing warehouse set-up would allow.
Currently under construction, the system has been designed to TNT’s specific requirements comprising 48 mobile racks and 13 levels of shelving reaching a height of over 14 metres. Each aisle will be kept at 1.5 metres wide, in order to fully utilise the available space, in which man-up trucks will operate and each mobile will come complete with an inboard sprinkler system and smoke detection device.
Paul Sanders, National Operations Manager of TNT Archive Services, said: “We are delighted to have awarded the contract to SSI Schaefer. It was clear that we needed a bespoke solution for our archive extension that incorporated the latest in fire suppressant technology that would give us and our customer’s total peace of mind. Schaefer have certainly met the challenge and given us something unique within the archiving and storage sector.”
John Dixon, SSI Schaefer’s Mobile Racking Product Manager, said: “We are delighted to have won the contract to fit out TNT’s extended Archive Services division with SSI Schaefer’s mobile racking system which will provide significant increase in box capacity and instant accessibility to every single archive box.”
He continued: “When the system is complete, it will be the biggest mobile racking system, by value, in the UK, serving as the hub of TNT’s new storage facility and undoubtedly making it one of the UK’s most impressive archiving operations.”
