What’s the most exciting thing about your job?
Ensuring that clients are amazed at what we can do for them.
Who inspired you most in your career?
Everyone who started with nothing and has a successful well known business. Regardless of size, people who start with nothing and create a successful company deserve everything they get.
If you were an item in a warehouse, what would you be?
The forklift. Until recently I did not have my certificate to use one. Amazing machines and essential to any warehouse. I used to watch the warehouse driver move these pallets so easily and now I can move them I realise how much skill is involved. Respect.
What brought you to this industry?
Motorcycling, I had ridden motorcycles for years and my wife & I had just came back from a year travelling around Europe. My wife suggested that as we had a bike we might as well start a courier company. How naive!
If you had to do it all over again, what would you do different?
More market research and gain more experience first. We started with absolutely no experience in this industry and made many mistakes before realising what we should be doing.
What’s your favourite pastime?
Our young family are great fun but still motorcycling and bad golf.
What’s the most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to you?
I was elected Chairman to the NCA (National Courier Association) in 1998 and had never chaired a meeting in my life. Being unprepared, one of the meetings was a disaster and I was dragged over the coals for it! Never again will I be unprepared.
Do you have any hidden talents?
Weirdly enough I can fit kitchens!
Who would be your favourite party guest?
Sir John Harvey Jones, Ex ICI boss. I used to watch his programs on Television and thought he would be brilliant to meet. It’s a pity he died last year as the countries current manufacturing industry could do with his genius.
What is the greatest luxury in your life?
My kids are a luxury I can’t afford but wouldn’t change anything. After that my new GSXR1000. Boys and toys!
If you won the Lottery, what would you do?
Invest in our company to improve our services then take a long holiday.
Who or what makes you laugh?
Our Government and Bankers. Who would employ them?
Do you have any secret ambitions?
My wife and I have always fancied running a campsite and B&B of all things!! Of-course we have no experience at all so that’s about right.
What’s your favourite holiday destination?
USA, I just love the American people. And the country.
What’s your favourite music album?
Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours followed closely by Meatloaf’s Bat out of Hell.
What’s your favourite movies?
Butch Cassidy & Sundance kid, Jaws and Steve Martin movies are usually pretty good. Although I am a secret Sci fi fan.
What’s your favourite book?
Anything that is escapism. I read to relax.
Who or what do you detest the most?
Dishonesty. Which means most of our Government and Banking directors.
What would be your advice to someone thinking about coming into the industry (apart from “don’t do it”)?
Ensure you have a good business plan and that you have the financial resources in place.
