What’s the most exciting thing about your job?

Building strategic plans for the business and seeing the implementation of the plans having a direct result in company growth.

Who inspired you most in your career?

My younger brother, Eric. He built a successful construction business in South Africa, from nothing, facing so many obstacles and challenges, but never gave up. His determination to succeed has really inspired me in my own career.

If you were an item in a warehouse, what would you be?

The ventilation system. I can blow hot and cold depending on how people turn my dials.

What brought you to this industry?

I got drawn in to the fuel card industry about 6 years ago when I was head hunted for a role with Arval, to market their AllStar fuel card to small and medium sized businesses.

If you had to do it all over again, what would you do different?

I would have started playing golf at a much younger age.

What’s your favourite pastime?

Watching rugby and hacking a golf ball around the golf course.

What’s the most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to you?

As a student I worked as a waiter for the Spanish Embassy in Pretoria, South Africa. At one of the events FW de Klerk was the guest of honour. He asked for a glass of Champagne and when I popped the cork I managed to hit de Klerk on his arm with the exploding cork.

Do you have any hidden talents?

I play the drums. I even gave drum lessons to Robert Mugabe’s step daughter when I lived in Zimbabwe a few years ago.

Who would be your favourite party guest?

Desmond Tutu. He has a great sense of humour but is also very wise. He will keep party gusts entertained for sure.

What is the greatest luxury in your life?

My 42 inch LCD High definition TV and Sky Sports HD.

If you won the Lottery, what would you do?

Play more golf and buy a stake in the Blue Bulls rugby franchise.

Who or what makes you laugh?

A few good TV comedy shows. That Mitchell and Webb look is currently a favourite, as is Curb your enthusiasm and My name is Earl. I am tempted in growing an Earl moustache.

Do you have any secret ambitions?

To become a renowned National Geographic photographer, specialising in wildlife photography.

What’s your favourite holiday destination?

South African bushveld.

What’s your favourite music album?

Blonde on Blonde – Bob Dylan.

What’s your favourite movies?

Fargo, The Godfather Trilogy, Cinema Paradiso and Oh Brother Where Art Thou?

What’s your favourite book?

Anything by Michael Crichton. He is the master at combining a great story with science.

Who or what do you detest the most?

Bad drivers that cut in front of you without leaving space, or whose dangerous driving puts my and my family’s lives in danger.

What would be your advice to someone thinking about coming into the industry (apart from “don’t do it”)?

Always think 2 steps ahead and never assume anything.
