cul_trucks.jpgFood and drink supply chain specialist Culina Logistics has announced it is to open a new distribution centre at Cabot Park, Bristol. The facility provides Culina with a significant expansion of its service capability in the south west of England. The company’s ambient operation in nearby Pucklechurch will be relocated into the new depot by the end of January 2009, with a chilled operation commencing shortly afterwards. Around 200 people will be employed at the site once it is fully operational.

“This Avonmouth facility is an important part of Culina’s development plan,” says the company’s commercial director, Steve Winwood. “It enables us to meet the growing requirements of our current customers, to accommodate some of the volume we anticipate from our recent agreement with Wincanton and to target new business, particularly from the south west region.”

Established at Market Drayton, Shropshire in 1994, Culina provides shared-user supply chain solutions for many of the leading food and drink manufacturers in the UK.

The award winning company has a turnover of around £130 million and, due to its continued success, has grown significantly – opening major new facilities at Milton Keynes in 2001, Stafford in 2006 and Haverhill in 2008.

The Avonmouth site will feature the latest ‘state-of-the-art’ warehouse management system to constantly monitor and update stock levels to ensure maximum efficiency and maintain the company’s 99.995% pick accuracy.

Culina chief executive Thomas van Mourik says: “The new site is the latest stage in our plan to establish Culina as the market leader in high-quality, multi-temperature logistics services for the food and drink industry in the UK.

“It will further strengthen our operations and will reinforce the robustness of our business model at a time when market pressures and economic conditions are having an impact on others within the supply chain industry.

“All of our customers can have the utmost confidence in Culina’s continuing ability to deliver.”

The announcement of the new site follows on from the recent news that Culina is to merge Wincanton’s UK chilled consolidation business into its own supply chain operation with effect from 28th March next year.
