sk-moffet.jpgSmurfit Kappa Recycling, which collects and recycles paper and cardboard from businesses of all sizes, has expanded its fleet of vehicles with truck-mounted fork-lifts. The self-loading vehicles have become particularly popular with customers because the fork-lift can work independently of the vehicle, unlike a truck mounted crane. All of the forklifts in the fleet are fitted with specialist clamps so that they can handle bales or cardboard, paper or plastic, without the need for pallets. This minimises the carbon footprint of the collection and handling process because there is no need for the vehicle to transfer its load to a depot location first.

The ready-baled material can be delivered directly into Smurfit Kappa Recycling’s paper mills where it is used to make new packaging materials. This has proved to be a trouble-free and efficient recycling solution for a wide range of customers in retail, distribution, automotive and print.

“Customers really like the fact that we aren’t calling on their own resources – whether that’s staff or equipment – to load the vehicle, so there is no interruption to their working day. Our drivers just turn up and get on with the job. It’s a complete solution,” says business development manager, Mike Challans.

With a national fleet of articulated vehicles, including four vehicles with fork-lift trucks and a range of smaller vehicles, Smurfit Kappa Recycling can collect from anywhere in the UK. Customers can also deliver to the company’s eight depots from Glasgow to Southampton or directly into the paper mills in Birmingham and Kent. This versatility enables businesses to find a solution with the minimal carbon footprint.

Driven by legislation and the growing concerns of environmental responsibility, businesses and industry are recycling greater volumes than ever before. Paper and card are the easiest and most obvious materials to segregate from the waste stream and increasingly companies are investing in their own baling equipment so that it can be stored efficiently onsite prior to collection. Baler clamps for forklifts can cost between £5,000.00 and £7,000.00, an additional equipment outlay which customers can avoid if they use Smurfit Kappa Recycling’s specialist fork-lift truck vehicle for collections. Smurfit Kappa Recycling can also provide customers with air extraction systems, balers, compactors, skips and office recycling bins for use at their premises.
