palletforce.jpgAs the UK’s leading supplier of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), Calor offers a comprehensive customer training package which, the company’s Sales Academy Coordinator, Phil Anderson, says can help ensure a safe working environment for forklift truck operators. “At Calor, we offer two forklift truck training courses for our customers operating LPG powered vehicles: Safe Refuelling Instruction and Train the Trainer. Both courses aim to teach forklift truck operators how to refuel equipment correctly and safely when using Calor LPG.” The Safe Refuelling Instruction course, designed for people who carry out refuelling duties on LPG powered forklift trucks utilising Calor hand operated units (HDUs) or, electric dispenser units (EDUs), is a short three-hour course delivered at a location to suit the recipient company.

Instruction involves a mix of both theory and practical elements and delegates are required to demonstrate an understanding of the instruction given and complete a written assessment.

The more extensive Train the Trainer course is designed for people who may themselves be required to carry out instruction to forklift truck operators in the safe use of Calor LPG HDU or EDU dispensing equipment.

This full one day course is a mix of theory and practical exercises where delegates are required to take on board technical and safety information. Delegates are asked to carry out an instruction exercise to demonstrate competence using the Calor instruction package and complete a written assessment. Successful delegates receive a certificate of competence and become a Calor approved forklift truck LPG refuelling instructor and are able to use the Calor Instruction package within their own companies.

The course is ideally suited to be run at a customer’s own premises where a suitable training environment and refuelling equipment is available and Calor’s training sessions are held throughout the year.

Phil continues: “Safe operation of FLTs should never be underestimated, and Safety Week is an ideal time to remind employees of the importance of good practice when refuelling.”

To support these training courses Calor has also produced a pocket sized booklet called A Guide to Safe Refuelling for operators, available to both new and existing customers. This covers personal safety, hazardous places and area classification, housekeeping, cylinder storage, separation distances, installations, refuelling instructions, manual handling and action in an emergency.

Laura Luty, Calor’s Bulk Market Manager, adds: “At Calor we are committed to ensuring both new and existing customers are trained to the highest possible levels and aim to work in partnership with them to ensure safe refuelling procedures are followed every time.”

The Safe Refuelling Instruction training package costs £490 plus VAT per course and the Train the Trainer course is £950 + VAT per course. Both courses are restricted to a maximum of six delegates per session. The Safe Refuelling Instruction package is offered free of charge to new customers the first time the course is delivered.
